We had a crazy adventure picking up this my abandoned DeLorean dude that's not moving. That is much better. That's what a 33 000 DeLorean looks like. Yeah, we got no brakes.
We got no brakes. All right getting pulled over again and I was even able to get this old engine to fire after sitting for 32 years. There it is there it is. Getting this car back to my shop was absolutely surreal and I still cannot believe there we go Then I own my childhood movie dream Car is as bad as it looks right now and and as dangerous as this may be.
But now the real work begins to get this car fully restored and back on the road. And to do that, we need to clean this car for the first time in three decades and take it all apart to see what Mysteries lie beneath. This is one of the first few hundred Deloreans ever made. So who knows what we find.
We gotta get this thing in the wash bay. We're gonna start with a wash, then we're removing the hood, the bumpers, the wheels. We got so much to do before we wash the car. We got to get the junk out of the trunk.
Actually, this stuff is in junk. It's gold. It's so much fun looking through this. I may just have to make a complete video going through all the paperwork with this car because there's some cool stuff in here.
but for now we need to get it out so we don't get it wet. They're a total of six struts on this car and we're gonna be replacing them all because everything keeps falling on me. Is this the first part? I've replacing my DeLorean it is. This is a momentous occasion.
We're gonna do both of these now. Trailering this car home from North Dakota 700 miles. Definitely cleaned it up a bit, but this is how the car looked when I got it. It's a pretty standard barn find, although it was technically in a garage.
Very dusty, very dirty. Let's get to Washington and this is the urethane bumper cleaning right up. It's beautiful. Look at the difference between where we pressure washed and where we didn't It's so satisfying watching these stains just get magically erased.
I Don't even think they had foam cannons with this car. Yeah, things came out way later. Oh, and we're having a sale on ours Legit streetcars. foam cannons link below.
Oh I Love this car. Thank you so much all rinsed off. let's dry it here she is. After a quick wash it looks so good and next up we're gonna rip the seats out of here.
We're gonna fully restore the leather. it's staying up. Did we just fixed the doors and clean this thing? Oh man this is too cool and these are Factory straps I Gotta get a new one DeLorean added these. After the fact they realized that people were complaining they couldn't reach so they added like it looks like a piece of belt and this is too good.
I Love it. Can't wait to drive it! Yeah! I don't know if you noticed this this goop? I don't know either guys. Uh, we're gonna figure it out later, but there's there's goop in here. Okay so we gotta figure out how to get these seats out. They are manual and this one won't adjust at all unless DeLorean Decided to put the studs through the floor and the nuts on the bottom to get all rusty. This should be fun! I've sprayed them down with a little bit of penetrating oil though, so all we can do now is pray. All right, it's been a little while. Let's see we got here.
Please don't break. Okay, oh it's getting harder. No okay, let's go back. Let's go back.
So if the nutter breaks free but then starts to hang up, it means the threads on the outside here are dirty and we need to clean those up a little bit more penetrating oil. Now we should be good. Uh, much better. Sweet look at that beautiful, beautiful stud.
Okay, well that was one. We have four per side so wish me luck. You're not gonna believe this. I didn't break any studs off.
Let's see this coming out. These seats are so light. let's get the other one and get the cleaning All right. His passenger seat looks a little worse.
she's moldy. Oh we can fix it. We got some old Wisconsin beef jerky. look at that.
There's still some in there. 40 year old beef jerky. or is that poo from rodents? Who in beef jerky? Who jerky? Passenger seat is out as well. and this is what we're starting with.
We have mold. We definitely have loss of dye here and right here as well and more mold. But other than that, the seats look okay and we're gonna make them look brand new with the Clyde's leather care kits. First Step Clyde's leather cleaning foam.
We're dealing with a pretty extreme situation here. so I'm just gonna blast it with some air and we're gonna use the foam here to get in and clean all this mold they give you this little guy too. It's amazing. Gets in everywhere.
This stuff smells so good. This foam cleanser is really good even if you just need to clean your seats. Some of the best stuff I've ever used you. check this out.
Oh these are gonna be so nice. Wow, look at this from just cleaning with the foam. Sweet Let's keep this going. This stuff reminds me of using hot shaving cream on your face.
It's just. it's so good. This part's done as well. with the brush and the foam.
You can clean a nasty seat like this in about two minutes. It's really easy. Next up we're going to use the leather prep and deglaze. This is really important.
It's going to remove any oils in the pores of the leather That way our dye can soak right in and this is super easy to evaporates almost immediately and it's already looks a million times better than before. Next we have the leather recoloring balm and they have a bunch of different colors so just check the website and you'll probably find what you need for your car. This is the fun part. Oh, and this isn't only recoloring the leather, this is also conditioning the leather so that it doesn't crack in the future. So it's going to keep it nice and supple and soft. And right now all that dye is just soaking into all the pores so you can do little spot repairs if you'd like. But I'm just going to dye the whole seat and this only takes a few minutes too. I Think out the door.
We'll have like 10 minutes per seat into this restoration and obviously you can do this with the seat still in the car as well after you've applied the recoloring bomb on the entire seat. You're simply going to wipe off any excess with a microfiber. That's all after wiping off all the excess. The last step is the leather conditioning cream, which is also a good Standalone product.
It has a nice natural neutral smell to it and so you can use this even if you haven't recovered your seats. Just put a little bit on a microfiber and then we're just going to work it in and this is going to offer basically a top coat to the recoloring process. Oh, and if you're curious if any of the dye rubs off it doesn't, check it out. This is a brand new white towel nothing seat is all done and look at the difference.
This is insane. Here's the wear at the bottom of the bolster before and here it is after it's completely disappeared. The top of the seat was in really rough shape. so here's what it looked like before and after our Clyde's kit.
Here is what it looks like after: Nasty seat. Beautiful seat. If you guys want to restore your leather seats in a few minutes for very little money, then you can buy the entire Clyde's leather care kit with my link down below and use coupon code: Legit 10 for 10 off and if you want to save 20, you can take their quiz so I'll drop the link down below. You can also buy Clydes on Amazon although the coupon codes don't work there, but either way it's a fantastic product.
I've been using it for a long time to restore the black leather seats on my car. They have many other colors as well, so check it out and let me bring these seats outside really quick. I Just I Got to show you this in the natural sunlight. And then we got to do the we really got to do that passenger seat.
It's it's not looking good. Oh and these are supposed to be black. So this is what happens after they get sun faded and mold attacks them and they just sit around for a long time. They kind of turn into this grayish color, but from the factory they're actually supposed to be black like this.
There are only two seat options. one was a very light gray and one was black. So we're Back in. Black The fluorescent lights can be a little much sometimes, but this is what it looks like in the natural sunlight.
So so good. And here you can see on the passenger side seat that it is supposed to be black down there. So let's let's finish the job. Now the reason I did the seats first was to remove them from the interior so we could attack this nasty headliner.
I'm not even going to attempt to clean this thing because the glue is separating behind it and it just needs to be redone. I Believe this just Clips out. Yeah, these should be pretty easy. Cool DeLorean stuff. Look at this. This is really awesome to see. There's a T right there. That's what it's for.
It's for Tony What's a T Irish name I don't know. whatever. We got the stainless spot welds. This is awesome.
It's like a refrigerator. I have an upholstery shop that I can recover this but once it starts kind of coming out you can try and re-glue it. But the problem is all this stuff. it'll just start flaking away.
It's it's nasty. Now the door Headliners prove to be very, very easy. the rest not so much. Okay, I'm not really sure what's going on here.
The weather stripping goes over this, but this is part of the structure of the vehicle. huh? Okay, so they must have wrapped the headliner around that. So kind of. The last step of this will be for me when I go to install the new one.
Yeah, look at that. It gets held in by the weather stripping. Okay, looks like we just have a couple of screws to remove these sun visors with the seats out. This is so easy.
But our next step is weather stripping which we're going to be replacing anyway. so we get a little bit of overlapping labor. Oh this weather stripping is in rough shape I am the Cookie Monster the Cookie Monsters you got kids. You know what I mean Or if you're a human being you know the Cookie Monster being it was a Cookie Monster come on now this hopefully is just clipped in.
This is why I didn't vacuum yet. This is getting nasty in here. We'll get this weather stripping off as well. Get out of here.
Well looks like we just have two clips in here. I just break that might have just broken that. one of these do slide. How would you do that? Oh wait, oh Oh oh that's it.
Okay, yeah, this just it. just slides. I Didn't know that. Okay, we can fix that.
Now you know there's a learning experience for both of us. Yeah, we have a few wires here for the dome light. Foreign. Got The Black Lung Pop.
And here's more of that fiberglass structure underneath the headliner. The DeLorean wasn't just unique because of the stainless steel body. It was also primarily made from fiberglass on a full frame. This combination had really never been seen before.
It's part of the reason why this car is just so light. At only 2 700 pounds, let's just slid in to the B pillars. Oh wait, no, it's not. It's got one of those.
Not one of those guys. There's one screw holding this guy in just on this side. All right, that's it. Four pieces of headliner.
Yeah, these are all bad. Wow, This is interesting. This is not actual ribbon wire. These are just regular wires that they put this little backing film on there.
They're just individual normal wires. Okay, look at that. It's like fake ribbon wire. The reason I'm going in the order I'm going is because some of these parts need to go to other shops like all of the headliner pieces. and now we have to take off the bumpers because those need to be repaired at the body shop. So let's go figure out how to do that. Our first step in the exterior restoration is actually to remove this hood that doesn't need any work. but it's got to come out in order for us to remove the front bumper.
and I Just found this ground wire right here that needs to be removed first. Okay, well we ran into an issue already. This bolt just keeps spinning and we can't get to the bottom of it. so I'm gonna see if we can just remove this ground wire.
This part looks to be crimped right here so we can bend that back and then these are usually soldered or crimped, but it's an early DeLorean They didn't have a lot of money, they probably didn't even have solder at the factory yet. Yep, there we go. Cool. That's easy enough.
now. we don't have to mess with this bolt at all. This might have been from the DeLorean Factory see that little white line right there. so they probably took a screwdriver like this and traced it to get the hood to line up and we're gonna do one on the top too.
There we go. I Don't believe anybody. Works Been done to this car because they would have fixed this right here and they didn't Same thing with this damage here. I Don't think they did anything to this car and we just have four 10 millimeter nuts on each side.
Stop hitting the stainless. Helix Ah, lock washers and nuts. Oh and we have this wiring harness here too. Let's hope we can easily disconnect that.
I Love seeing anything written on anything. Oh what does it say? Test Electrically tested I Think it says yeah, Electrically tested Sweet! If I've ever seen these connectors before, I'm super excited to get these bumpers off. Who knows we're going to find this is a super early DeLorean I Mean they just opened the factory and it was only open for 18 months total. in Ireland this car was built in Ireland We could potentially see some like test mule type of stuff under there I don't I don't know.
We're gonna find out together though. Okay I got all the nuts off? How's that? There we go. Oh it's really light actually now I need this hood kind of out of the way so what's the guy to do but to place it on top of the space van? DeLorean Hood Going on the one-of-one concept space van, this was never supposed to happen and now look at this. we're in DeLorean Race car mode.
This is awesome and we have a bird in the shop with us today. It's scared of me for some reason I Don't know why but I've already named it. it's DeLorean it likes clay. All right See you DeLorean I believe these screws have to come out Okay so far good noises.
Oh yeah, this is great. Okay definitely don't want to cut my chickens yet but so far so good on Hardware It was garage kept for the last 32 years so hopefully this stuff isn't too bad. Definitely a little bit of rust. All right. cool. I got the top loose, a bunch of tens underneath we need to get and I did spray anything obvious a few days ago was penetrating oil. This doesn't make me feel good I haven't snapped yet. Okay, be all right.
I'm definitely glad I sprayed these though. I think these would have broken had we not already broke these loose I Love this! Hardware it just looks like stuff you'd get at Home Depot they have Home Depot in Ireland in 1981. What's an Irish hardware store? It'd be like boats and nuts. It's my Irish accent.
Yeah, that's really good. Top of the morning ladies. So one day that'll be an Irish hit song. Oh What is this? Yeah, it's like wood.
Did they use wood as a washer? Yeah, they kind of did. I don't know what happened here. Okay I don't think this was remnants from running off the road. This is a legit piece of wood that they use to space this out.
It's a piece of DeLorean history right here. This is by far the worst bumper ever. I've been at this for about an hour now. There are two studs, one there and one there into the stainless body that'll hold this on that broke off.
I Got this one out so that's nice. But just check out this DeLorean Goodness this is a screwdriver right here and that is a stud. A nut does not go on that. I Found out that DeLorean just used that as kind of a guide pen and you have to pry this piece around it.
Very difficult. This all just really stinks. Okay I'm taking a break from that I can't get it. Uh, supposedly this Grille just pops right out.
So I'm just going to move on to something easy to make me feel good. They really like over built the attachment of the bumper to the car. It is insane. Come on.
DeLorean Trying to make you nice again. Don't break Great Scott Beam me out of here. Let's see. the name Scott was very well represented back in the day.
wasn't it? Whatever happened to the name? Scott Don't meet too many new babies that are named Scott anymore. Do you? Scott should come back. Shout out to all the Scots out there. Great Scott Oh yes, Oh yes.
Are these literally just screws? Oh wow Whoo! Okay, we got something going on in there. Okay, oh my gosh, that was horrible. Let me show you what's going on here. These guys here are riveted into the bumper and then they literally just use regular screws for these to like slide into so they don't get screwed out.
There's no way to access these screws or anything from the back side. You just have to pop it off. All right. Well anyway, that's part of the bumper off the first part.
I've been at this for way too long I Was expecting to find cool DeLorean artifacts in here and I'm just finding poop from mice. but it does look like man someone carved something into this number four and some symbol or something I don't know. Let's keep going I'm gonna get this off. so there was a reason we need to take that Grill off and it's just to get to this one screw right here that attaches this bracket to the body of the car. So right now I have every single Fastener removed and look at this like this is how solid this bumper is still on the car. It's it's insane. I mean we've removed eight from here like 10 from the bottom I don't even know and now supposedly we have to kind of peel this up and around like the front core support area. I Guess did DeLorean make the best car ever? It's the most difficult to work on and the most painful.
Wow. fingers getting crushed. There's a bracket in here with a stud and I can kind of get it over it by lifting my knee up in there and kind of pulling it. Sort of.
Sort of. not at all just for this chip. Okay all right, this stud spinner with the nut on top. We can't get it out so you have to grind it There we go.
That's totally normal thing to do in your DeLorean Okay now now will you come off? not even close? I'm taking the headlights out as well. Just a bunch of Phillips screws. It says this little piece and these are old school sealed halogen beams. same on.
like every car. Oh, we found an animal. I mean an insect? It's DeLorean the bee. Any animal associated with this vehicle will now be called Deloreans Is this an 80s mummy bee? All right there we go.
Totally gonna restore these buckets in here even though no one will see those. The fit on this car is unreal. The screws are just covered by the bumper. You just gotta pry it up.
Get them out. They don't make stuff like they used to, that's for sure. If it was in your way, you just pry it out there. We go All right.
I'm just getting this valence out of here because I'm talking about we broke. Well this is the only one we didn't break, but we broke all the studs here, broken here and broken here. which is fine. honestly.
I'm glad I'm glad they just broke because I was trying to be gentle. It didn't work. but we're just gonna be drilling holes in there. washers, bolts, nuts.
We'll use all stainless steel. it's gonna be better. I'm pulling this light out too and undo the bulb and we have in here. Oh it's like a portal.
A perfectly round portal of foam. Okay, and we get that. Remember that stud with that bracket? I think if I just do this, I'll be able to pop it out there. We go all right.
I'm gonna do the same on the other side I wonder if we can kind of peel this back this way? So this is interesting. This part of the bumper needs to come above the fender I already bent this in but I need to bend it some more and we got to bend that out of the way. or I'd have to cut a line here and it looks like from the factory they were cutting in here as well. So I I don't know I don't know how they got this in there. Do you guys see that nut right there? that's like impossible to get to? I've been at that for a half hour. sorry, the lighting's no good right now. There we go. That's a good.
that's that's a decent look. Yeah, that nut right there. Worse nut ever. That's why we can't get this thing off.
Oh, that's it. That bracket I got another one to do. It's gonna take like another hour. That's it.
It's that stupid bracket in there with a nut on it that is wild. Seriously guys, this this what you've seen here in the last few minutes of the video. I Think it's I'm on three and a half hours right now on the driver's side here. I'll just have to pry this bracket away from the stud.
Now there we go. I Was talking to my guys at DeLorean Midwest and they have never seen the stud on the top with the nut. They only saw the stud on the bottom and usually they had no nut. they were just a guide it in.
So this is definitely like one of those weird early DeLorean things and it was a big pain in the butt. So now this bumper should come right off coming off DeLorean bumper. Okay, Oh, I got it. That was easy.
I'm just kidding. that was not easy. It was horrible. But it's off.
Look at this little thing. It's held down by like 50 screws and bolts. DeLorean You overdid yourself. Oh, these brackets are hilarious.
So in talking with my guys at DeLorean Midwest they've never seen these upper brackets. I Don't know what happened at the factory this day. It's like they just grabbed some flat stock, cut it off, drilled a bunch of holes in it, and added these. Maybe as an experiment.
They're completely unnecessary. Look at all the screws on the top that hold this thing in. I Kind of don't even understand why they did this. These are not going back in, but I'm keeping them.
this is. this is DeLorean history right here. Wow, this is really dirty in here. What's really nice is this foam is an excellent original condition and these had I think like 10 or 15 mile an hour bumpers.
And another factoid for the DeLorean is this is one of the first cars that had crumple zones in the frame they got together with. It was either Allstate or State Farm Insurance They partnered with them to create these crumple zones so this was actually kind of a safe car back in the day. We're definitely going to restore these buckets here, but we are on a time crunch. We have to get the bumpers to the body shop, so let's hope this rear bumper is much easier.
Looks like we have about eight of these nuts for the rear. I've been soaking these with penetrating oil for like a week, but I'm worried that they're gonna pull out of the actual plastic bumper. All right, get lucky here. Whew! we got one.
We got one. Yay! All right! So we got the second one off this third one. I Think it's definitely going to rip out. Yeah, there's not gonna be much we can do about that. This type of stud was melted into the plastic of the bumper and it's just rotted. There's not much we can do, it's just gonna break. Yeah, so we'll have to get that fixed at The Body Shop Shouldn't be too bad. Yeah, you can see it's disconnected, but it's just completely pulled out of the plastic.
Is this one gonna rip? Probably. Maybe. Yeah. Okay, that one broke right off.
Next, we have to take these tail lights out and someone did four of the screws for us. It's only got two flat heads in here. It's a little weird I think these bulbs are out in here so maybe they were trying to fix something. Oh wow, yeah, this one's broken off.
This one's all wobbled out. Okay, more repair work here and we have new circuits for this we'll put in later. One down looks like this has to come out to replace your license plate and it's got two out of the four screws in it. Oh wow.
Okay, look at that. That's how the license plate Clicks in sweet daylight. number two. Oh yeah, we'll definitely to clean this too made in England Up top we have a bunch of Phillips next for the rear bumper is right in here.
We have some studs with nuts sprayed everything down. not bad. I Want to jinx myself here, but so far the rear bumper is much easier than the front. I Think we have everything now.
Still held down really well though. Gosh, and we're messing around with fasteners on these. Okay, oh my gosh, what is this? Body shims and stuff? They're probably for the studs. that'll be easy to get back in.
Can't wait! Okay, it's even more. Oh my gosh. Stop. Stop having shims fall off.
DeLorean Oh, it's like 50 million of them. Oh that is. Oh no, that is. a bad sound guys.
Okay, all right, that's a good sound. Rear bumpers off there, she is easier to remove. I Think it's going to be more difficult to reinstall, but that's for future. Alex to deal with.
Not only is this really cool to see, but it's nice to be able to inspect the structure back here behind the bumpers. And I'm going to go ahead and say that this looks all original. The car was parked in 1991 and this bumper foam. Everything in here looks completely untouched.
And look at how thick this foam is. These were 10 mile an hour bumpers. so they were meant to absorb 10 mile an hour of impact before you know, destroying the car, damaging the car at all. That's really, really cool.
This is all fiberglass, super lightweight. Here's one of many shims that we'll have to put in later. and yeah, they fell out all over the place. Some are are very, very thick too.
With both bumpers off, it's time for some new. Wheels Some temporary new wheels so you can see here. these are the silver wheels that are on most Deloreans and these are the dark gray wheels that came on the first few hundred. We're definitely going to stick with dark gray, but I Want to have them powder coated and the new tires put on? Here's a good side by side of the color difference and these just have a little bit of corrosion. so we're going to have them all stripped down and made brand new again and look at these original 1981 tires. They've definitely seen better days. but if you guys saw the Reveal video, you know I'm missing a caliper. I'm upgrading the entire brake system so we're gonna have bigger brakes on the DeLorean Those along with like 32 other mechanical parts are on order and that's just the stuff I can visually inspect.
Probably gonna need much, much more now. I'll definitely need to restore the metal piece that the rear bumper bolts to. So after spraying down all of the hardware and removing the 10 millimeter nuts, it just fell right out. All right.
So I have the headliners out to get reupholstered. the wheels are getting re-powder coated, the bumpers are getting repaired and painted, so we have our sublet shops working at the same time that we're working as well. So next up. I Gotta get these headlight buckets out so we're going to bring them to a vapor hone machine and there's one Phillips on top That should be it.
I Think beautiful and you can't remove these without removing the bumper cover. This is going to give us such a good chance to Mint this area out. We'll get this little bugger off too. Parts of the car were made in England So I can I can say that kind of stuff? Okay, these are a perfect candidate for restoration.
This is all just surface rust. Nothing has gone through at all. This is going to look mint and now it's time to blast everything back in time. All right.
Yeah, that worked out well. This looks a lot better and man, this is a ton of fun. I Mean how do I not keep going? Look at that. Oh are you kidding me? Look at this stainless steel.
We didn't even use any Degreaser or anything. Wow, this is beautiful. Yeah, look at this. It does say something in here.
Tap four: What does that mean? It almost looks like my writing actually did I end up going back in time to write that in there. What was I Trying to tell myself. tap four More mystery to this car with the hood off? It's a lot easier for us to get to this stuff as well. Yeah, there's a lot of ooh, a lot of nastiness.
Pressure washer time. You know what? this glue on here is pretty much coming off. Yeah, let's just do this the right way. Let's just take this guy off and really get in here.
So much better. We'll have to dig out all this adhesive, clean it up a little bit and reinstall gonna look sweet though. I'm gonna do the cowl as well so we'll remove this carpet here. We got to clean that anyway.
and I haven't peeked underneath here yet, but here is our spare tire. Oh yeah, it's a little deflated, but looks to be in good shape. What is going on here? Is this supposed to be a drain? There's a bolt there? Yeah. I'm not exactly sure what that is, but anyway, let's get everything out of here and we'll clean this area as well. Oh wait, what's this? I don't know what that is. Look at this cool little DeLorean seat belt. Or at least to get to the struts. No, not to get to the struts.
Okay, yeah, there's another one of those right here. Foreign. But if you get up in here, we can do much better. So this is just a little bit of General Degreaser So any of your purple Power and grain power and whatever other color power they come out with, that's all you need.
Yeah, you're gonna be able to eat off of this cowl when I'm done. We're doing a cosmetic restoration. We have all this apart. How do you not? Thank you! This is already looking so good and it's really nice to be able to see even more of the fiberglass structure of this vehicle.
Everything looks intact when we start the mechanical restoration. We're going to be pulling up some of these panels in this area to access the fuel tank so we can clean it out and replace the fuel pump. That is going to be pretty nasty. Yeah.
I've blown out all of the nooks and crannies and we're going to go over this with the microfiber now. Just get it really dry. The front end is all dried up. I've reinstalled our spare with air in it this time so we're ready to have a flat tire on the DeLorean with the front minted out.
Let's do the same with the rear. Thank you Foreign! We're done in the back, everything is dried up. I've inspected all of the wiring back here as well and nothing is cracked. It's actually in really good shape and I'm going to leave a little bit of patina I Could really wipe this down and get crazy, but we got to leave some.
North Dakota on this. DeLorean Now we're going to be replacing all of the weather stripping on this car. every last bit of it. It's all splitting and in pretty rough shape and it's all held in with glue so we can just go around and peel it.
Okay, tried to get it in one shot that didn't work. Oh man. DeLorean was using some super glue from the future. Wow, there we go.
The old stab stab method. Uh oh man. Oh, we got more cleaning to do. There's one.
Eat the goo. eat it. This is not my razor blade. We have to get all of this adhesive off.
This is plastic, but with a wire wheel this small. We can really get in here precisely and I'm just being very gentle so we don't dig in just getting the top layer off. That's all. Oh, this is all we need right here.
It doesn't need to be perfect. We're going to be filling this up with some pretty sticky adhesive and then the weather stripping is going to go right over it. But for now, yeah, this, this could look better. I'm going to use our same General Degreaser and the worst spray bottle ever. We'll get in here with the brush that's nice and soupy. How much to drink this right here? This is a torsion bar so it's not only the shock that we replace that pops the doors up is a very important part too. I'm gonna clean this side up too and we're gonna replace this weather stripping. Is this one really just going to come right off? Yes it is.
The front one was way harder. What's nice about this side is we're grinding on the stainless steel so we can get this much cleaner and would have never found this. But we have a couple of loose screws here and this is what holds this panel in that could create a Rattle and we're going to be able to fix it right now. Excellent! It's not stripped.
That one's good too. Now this panel doesn't move up and down anymore. Much better. Got this all agitated.
Now we're just going to use the microfiber to wipe it. Oh this is gonna look beautiful. So much better. All the channels are nice and cleaned out.
This is what the passenger side looked like before and this is what it looks like after. So we're missing a ton of weather strip here which will cover up a lot of this kind of stuff here. so this is going to look really really nice when we're done. But I'm not going to do the weather stripping until after we re-grain the stainless.
That's a couple days out. So for now I Gotta fix this Hackery here. I Pulled back some of the tape and this is what we have. They just Twisted some wires together.
This one here was held on by one strand. Let's see, these two are just. oh, they're Twisted together. Yeah this is really bad and they just cut this boot as well.
You have to make some proper wiring repairs that's for sure. Oh man, look at that. this is so hacked up. What in the world next? we have to tackle this carpet which is really nasty but luckily looks super easy to remove.
Seat belt buckle needs to go through easy enough. Well what are we gonna find on the floor of this car? This is so funny. Look at that. That's it.
There's your front DeLorean carpet that's out so let's see. Wow this is crazy that this is the floor. Look at this. Not that you can stand in this area but if you could I feel like you could just break right through this.
This is what the seats bolt into. This is really interesting I mean obviously it's nice that it's fiberglass. It's not rotted out or anything like that, but it seems weak to me. I Don't think this was ever an issue, but there you go.
Oh wait, what is this? Oh look at that. It's a pull strap for the door. So I found out these are Factory on the early cars they just came with a little strap and then later on they Incorporated the strap into this part of the door panel and left this handle. but it looks like maybe this was a replacement one.
I'm not sure. Let's take this guy over the E-brake off as well. It's really good in here and clean. Yeah, look at all this nastiness and clean this Gap as well. we can restore this rubber so this piece of carpet here gets glued in and I think we are going to go ahead and remove it, give ourselves a little bit more work. but I think it's worth it. Yeah there's the adhesive there we go and this should just pull off like that. Yeah, there we go.
Nice sweet and then on this one they give you some excess to go along this. Edge You kind of just looks like a leather green considering its age. It's actually really strong. We haven't opened this compartment yet.
Hopefully we don't have any dead mice. What's this? escort? No way. It's an old radar detector. Well, it seems empty.
Could be a dead body in here. We're gonna find out. Good bodies. No.
Then it holds cooled radar detector but nothing's in here. huh? Maybe we'll find it in the car somewhere. I Don't know but I would have found it by now. Oh and there we go.
This was definitely someone's home. Great! This is like stapled in I think it's literal Staples Okay, there's the back carpet and this is wood right here and it's come apart so we'll have to screw that back in and we have this back shelf carpet here easily comes out okay. we have this back panel here that I think is heavily insulated for noise. Oh yeah, this is where the rodents were living too.
Okay, good thing we're taking this off. Oh nasty, look at this home. 1980s mice were living in here. They're all gone now though.
Gone to mice. Heaven Caution: Do not interchange modules see Handbook. Oh okay. lots of stuff going on in here.
Oh man, it was right next to mice. Hopefully they didn't chew this up. This would be a nightmare to have to fix all of this. Well here are all the fuses I Chewed this up a little bit.
Not too bad. Wow. Okay, thank you mice. Overall this isn't bad at all and the harness is still nice and flexible.
Okay got lucky passenger side nasty carpet coming out. Oh man this is gross. Gross. Oh look at all that look at all the sunflower seeds I Brought their food home or did they find it in here? one of the two.
Okay, Florida Looks good though. okay. I highly recommend. Uh, a respirator I left mine at home Show Must Go On Let's get all this garbage out of here.
I Definitely heard some stuff coming out of there that's for sure foreign. I'm just gonna pull this whole thing up. There's just two bolts and we'll give it a good inspection in here. Yeah, glad I did that I need to get all this up too up the little tray here and we have more Mouse dropping so we got to take the center console out too.
Last thing we want is to have what looks to be a clean interior. but there's really mouse droppings and stuff in the center console. That's that's not good I need to replace the shifter anyway. Oh, got it. Okay, okay, let's take this off together. What Lies Beneath The center console I think I have everything. Oh so glad I did this. Here's the nastiness underneath the center console.
A couple of pennies. Wait a minute Pennies from your 2040. it's impossible. Where is it? Oh, 1974.
Whoops. thought it said 20 40. time travel joke. Yeah, this is pretty gross.
but the important thing is the wiring looks to be intact. I've inspected all the wires and it looks to be good. Got this back shelf off so we'll suck this out and we are gonna say goodbye to our what were these called again Vantage Ultra lights. Don't smoke.
It's bad. This thing should come out. Yeah, this comes out cool all right. Let's get to cleaning the center console and the carpet so that that stuff can dry for a few days.
It's all about just getting things prepared and having things working at the same time that you're working too. All the sublets have everything and then while carpets are drying, we're moving on. So it's just it's efficiency. I wonder how efficient DeLorean is? This doesn't get good gas mileage.
2 700 pounds got 130 horsepower V6 How many miles per gallon did a DeLorean get according to Ultimate specs with the fuel consumption of 11.2 liters 100 kilometers 25 MPG UK 21 MPG U.S 21 MPG that's not good. My McLaren gets 22 on the highway and everybody Compares McLarens and Deloreans You know would get better mileage in this car in LS like even a big 7 liter. LS Looks like we can take this center part off. I Mean we've gone this far right? We might as well clean in here.
Look at that Foreign I am getting in every little nook and cranny here. This is kind of a disinfecting as much as it is a cleaning. Oh yeah. Beautiful.
Let's see. Oh yeah, they use this thing kind of nasty. I think I might just get a whole new socket and I'll just replace the whole thing. All right.
this looks good. We're gonna clean this little guy just like normal. see what happens? I give it a really nice clean out I Just pried the plastic up and I think this will slide right off. Keep going.
Okay I can take that off and yes, we can pop that off too. And after all that, this is what our center console looks like now. So I am going to paint. the ashtray was kind of a little rusty.
All right guys. I soldered this one here. Uh, this one here is soldered and a couple other ones, but this is just really bad as I keep going. These wires are just breaking right in half.
They're all cut around the same length. Look at this right here. Yeah, right in half. So yeah, I'm not I'm not going to be happy with this and what I learned is to do this properly.
We actually have to remove this entire stainless steel roof this little t-section here and it also has to come off to replace this seal. We have to drill out these rivets. Kind of a big job and the only way to get this roof off is with this weather stripping already off to get to these screws the ones that were loose before. So much like the project thus far, we have to continue to remove stuff to inspect in order to order parts. We're basically ripping the entire DeLorean apart in preparation for the full restoration. So let's let's see what happens. Let's try and get this off without destroying it. So from what I understand, it's just these three screws on each side and then it tucks up in the front and there's double-sided tape or something in the middle.
I Don't know we are going to find out. We're basically explorers of a new world. Unless you've worked on Deloreans before, then you're like Alex I know exactly how that works. Okay, let's close the door now and I'll do this side as well.
So I was told that 9 out of 10 times this is just like double-sided taped but some of them were glued in and in that case, it's a nightmare to get this off and you can destroy the panel. so it sounds kind of good. Sounds like tape, right? Oh, this is so nerve-wracking Oh yeah, no that's tape. Yeah, cool.
That's great. Oh, it's like there's nothing I can't pry on anything I just need hand strength right now. Just hand finger prying. Ah oh there we go.
Yes! Wow. I Almost pinched myself there. All right, that's loose. It looks like it just has to go back now.
I'm not sure, but we do have screws back here. Oh no, found it. There's one missing here. Yeah, this is something we need to take out.
Okay, we're gonna slide this down. there. we go. Okay, yeah, these little guys clipped into that plastic.
Oh yes. stainless steel roof coming off. Not bad actually. kind of fun.
Okay, so let's see if that helps us at all and what we need to do. We're going to take this nice. Factory Tape off? Is there? What is it? What is in this? I Have no idea. I'm hoping this is exactly where the wires line up.
so I'm hoping we can access something in there. This is some kind of access panel here. I'll let you guys see first see anything. anything good? Oh wow.
Yeah, there's a lot of good stuff in here. This is exactly what we need. wires. Oh, this is great.
If we can pull the wiring harness through and repair things right here, that would be ideal. I Would just like to point out that this panel is literally just duct taped over. That's how it's held in. This has to be that harness.
Oh man. we could disconnect that. That'd be sweet. Yeah.
so I can feel inside. It's this connector right here. Yep, these are the wires in question. They're only damage there.
Other than that, they're perfect. So there's no way this connector is going to fit through the door for us to pull all these wires out. So we will have to d-pin this connector. So I'll take a bunch of pictures so we don't mess anything up. Oh and since you have to have that t-roof off to replace this seal here that's ripped on us, we're going to do that in the next video as well. So I have to drill out all these rivets and try not to damage the stainless steel. There's another seal on the other side so the roof's got to be out for a proper wiring repair and for these so it's a good while you're in there. We can move on to cleaning this carpet.
So Mike at DeLorean Midwest found a good used set for me. It's not perfect. it still needs to be cleaned, but it is much better than this. and there are some holes from where the rust from the seat frame kind of deteriorated the carpet so we're just going to replace it.
all. and many of these pieces here from here forward are all the new used ones. they. They look really nice, like they barely need any cleaning at all for the carpets.
Since we have them out, we're going to pressure wash them. I I Find that to be the easiest way to do this so we'll get them wet first and then I Love these brushes on the drill with any kind of multi-purpose foam cleaner and this has like a coffee stain or something in it. Let's see if we can get this guy out. I think we can.
Let's see we got oh hey, see that 1980s coffee coming right out? That's what I'm talking about right there. This carpet's gonna be mint. Ooh more 80s coffee. Let's see, sometimes the pressure washer will just get this right off.
Let's see. Yeah, you can still see some stains. Get a little bit of this, a little bit of that. There we go.
No more coffee. All right? good deal. I'm gonna go to town cleaning all of these and we'll just we'll just clean the other ones too while we're in there now. One thing I've noticed when cleaning carpets is even if you don't have visible stains like from coffee or food, there is a lot of stuff embedded in the fibers.
so this carpet looked pretty clean overall. So I sprayed it down, used the brush on the drill and this is what came out with the pressure washing. This has to be one of the most satisfying parts of detailing a car. If you have the carpets out, definitely use a pressure washer.
I'm done cleaning all of the carpet and before I bought my shop it was actually a detail shop and I always wondered what this little zip line was for I Still kind of don't know 100 but maybe it was for this. Maybe it was for hanging carpet up and having it drip dry. So yeah, this is working really really well with it folded over all the water is, you know, gravity science? You know what I'm talking about. It's coming down.
It's raining in here, so I'm gonna stick a fan on here as well to speed the process up, but these things are looking sweet. Okay, I'm going to end this one here. The goal of the video was to rip apart the entire DeLorean, discover what we needed to discover, and also send out all of our parts for sublet because that takes time while those shops are working. We could be doing other things. So in the next video we are reassembling the entire car. There is going to be a ton of awesome restoration and detail stuff in that video as well, including the repair of a crease on the bottom of a quarter panel which some people say is impossible to fix. So we're going to find out. We're also going to be re-graining all of the stainless, so that's essentially like getting a new paint job on on a DeLorean I Also have to do a ton of painting and cleaning and stuff like that and then you know, putting it all back together.
but by the end of the next video, we will have a fully cosmetically restored DeLorean It's going to take me a couple of weeks, but it's going to look amazing and then by then I'll have all my parts in to try and get the engine to run. So I'm really working hard to make my deadline of heavy in this car restored, running, driving and parked on the front lawn of my house for Halloween So I hope you guys really enjoyed this video. If you did hit the thumbs up button, it really helps me out. Share the video with your friends and family, subscribe if you haven't already and most importantly have a fantastic day! I'll catch all of you in the next video that I own my childhood dream my childhood movie dream Car.
look at the difference in the natural sunlight. this looks so stop grinding, stop grinding and we just have and we just have 14 that I own my childhood movie drink dream So I have a I have an upholstery shop I have an upholstery shop that can and now we gotta remove the bumpers because those needs to them that I own my childhood movie dream Car is poor. of the as poor as it looks, as bad as it looks, there's the nastiness underneath that. all right.
But yeah this is all right. But yeah this is pretty gross. But the important thing is the wiring looks so much like so much like the process. so much like the project.
Yeah these wheels are so light. Wheels: Okay so I'm gonna stick a fan on here as well to speed this process up but the cart left. you know what you know would get this. you know would get about the same mileage in this car.
like a big gigantic you know would get about the same mileage in this car that I own.
you can put fird 4.6 in them
im really loving this series, oh my god
I think my '81 DeLorean with the 5-speed manual weighs around 2960, dry, without me in it.
Spraying all that DeLorean dust onto the Corvette…
These body shims give me flashbacks when I was removing the rear and front bumper of my C4 Corvette.
Beam me up Scotty, that's how it goes. 🙂
I AM the cookie monster HEH HEH
When loosening rusty nuts, go out half turn, then back in half turn, then out 1 turn, then back in, etc. gotta clear the threads of rust or they will bind and snap.
The more you reveal the better condition this car looks. You found yourself a gem.
Oh and that 'TAP4' is 'TAPE' 👍👍
Your vacuum cleaner is now the perfect home for mice! 😁
1. You didn’t mark paid sponsor like you’re supposed to on YT… not a good idea. 2. That stuff does not get rid of the mold spores still in the seats so this is just going to come back. Probably should have had those professionally cleaned as mold is way more tenacious than you think.
DeLorean got much right then put a turd of an engine in a very special stainless steel car! I mean "Renault?"
Do you guys think it's realistic to have this car restored and running and driving by Halloween?
