Chevrolet tried the silicone impregnated aluminum blocks on the Chevy Vega in the early 70s, it was a complete failure.

Most problem with E46 M series is the driver….That said BMW did not property anticipate the metal fatigue. The ball joints are a heart attack as you buy them along with the lowqwer control arm.
If you can get the joints alone experts tell me they will not fit them owing to reliability issues…I paid nearly 1500 for both sides (2 x $740) and another $400( or thereabouts for the bushes (2 x $190)…OUCH!! Have you tried steel liners for the block issues?

I am sorry but I just saw 2 videos back to back of High mileage bmws and basically all the parts have been changed. I am sorry but bmw is a luxury for me not a necessity I have a 1997 volvo and I have fix it maybe 2 times in 20 years. And I have done it myself. Both fixes under 500 bucks lol I was thinking in getting rid of for an older mercedes buy why! The old volvo keeps going lol I saw a 7 series bmw video and it got all changed all it! Even interior parts were shot. I have 2 kids and I drive a lot my volvo is solid! And I bought a beat up toyota sequoia and I was telling to myself I will fix it eventually I did a fluid change and I kept driving it lol kinda crusty but mechanical is perfect. I went ahead and bought my wife a 2002 w210 wagon e320 and changed motor mounts and tranny mounts I fix it with 1k in parts so I kinda learning why German cars cost so much to fox the parts are far over engineer and overpriced my brothers Ford motor mounts are so simple compering to the hydraulic mercedes mounts. Very smooth car though the e320 wagon is crazy relaxing to drive.

Just like expected, but better, whats "parts of the bmw" are still original ๐Ÿ˜‚ okay this one was 400k miles but still bmw's and finding new parts.. you should start saving for parts once you buy a BMW, or if you buy used, already start looking and buying ๐Ÿ˜‚ and to top it off, they started using Mercedes parts on it ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ that is just incredibly funny, ironic and hilarilious ๐Ÿ˜‚

A fix for the aluminium cylinder blocks we sometimes do here in Australia is do what is known as "step lining". This involves the process of boring the cylinders beyond machining limits, then machining a "step" 5mm deep in the cylinders, and inserting the liners. These are sealed to the cylinder block using high temperature sealant to prevent coolant leaking into the sump.
