Electric Cars and Hybrids with Regenerative braking are prone to rust build up on brake rotors. This video will show you how to remove the rust for free and with no tools. I will also go over a few tips that my friends at Tesla and Faraday Future shared with me on proper EV/Hybrid brake maintenance. These brakes can last forever if you follow these very simple procedures.

I'm super excited to announce a totally free way that anyone can support the channel!! I was approved for an Amazon Influencer account which allows YouTubers like myself, and other creators to earn a small commission from sales generated from people first clicking on my Amazon link, and then buying anything from Amazon. This doesn't cost you a penny as Amazon compensates the creators for driving traffic and sales to the site. So even if you don't buy the product or tool that I link in the video description box, you are still supporting the channel by shopping on Amazon after you clicked through any of my links. Each video will have either specific links to things I use or talk about in the video, or you will see my general LegitStreetCars Amazon link like this. https://www.amazon.com/shop/legitstreetcars
Next time you need car parts, tools, diapers, condoms, fidget spinners or anything on Amazon think of good ole Alex from LegitStreetCars!

Is it possible to upgrade the brakes and rotors ?

Actually, when I was driving – never was an issue. My driving pattern was definitely using brakes enough. Now that the wife is driving the C-Max it became a thing. Front brakes are rusty in certain places, so high speed braking causes pronounced grabbing/pulsating. May have to get them spun to clean them up.

Can you use anything like Brake Clean to lessen the rust? And, can you use a dry lube or something to try to keep the rust from building up on the Volt's brakes, since they are rarely used? I'm having an issue with mine. It's in the shop after failing a NYS inspection due to this very problem. This is the second set of rotors and pads in 50K miles. I'm aggravated. I will do what you suggest, but I'm wondering if you could tell me how difficult it is to do the caliper cleaning/maintenance, and if you can do a video on that? I'm pretty handy, and work on my motorcycle, but I don't have a car lift like you do.

If your rotors look like that, you definitely don't drive that car daily.

Try explaining to the car inspection guy that it’s a hybrid and the brakes don’t get used…. He had none of it. So I had to change some perfectly good rear rotors. Thank you Pennsylvania.

I recommend against messing around like this video showed. Firstly, I found at first that trying to pull away from a stop while pulling on the parking brake control was not able to give the car enough power to actually pull away. I tried pulling the level while in motion at various speeds, and yeah, that worked. Then, for good measure, I decided to try pulling away from a stop again. Well, for whatever reason, THAT time the car was able to beat the brakes and moved forward….BUT….it also turned on the ABS, Stabiltrack, and Malfunction Indicator lamps. Crap!! ABS and Stabiltrack went away after power off/on the Volt, but the Malfunction Indication remains. Guess I'll be heading to the dealership with my head between my legs to ask them to clear. Hopefully I didn't damage anything. ;-(

Good video – I have a BMW i3, and have the same sort of issues with rusting rotors. To me it would be more appropriate for cars with regen to be fitted with drum brakes all round, there may be a good reason for not doing this, but I can't think of one – drum brakes work great on trucks and buses, so why not EV's? The other thing I do with mine is spray them with iron oxide removing wheel cleaners – the type that go purple on contact with iron oxide, the only down side is these products need rinsing off with water, which creates more surface rust 😔

Question, do you regularly drive in L or D? Just curious. I have a 2014 Volt with 33k miles and my brakes are still good looking. I drive in D on roads with little traffic and stops, where I can coast to the red lights. When things get tight in traffic or lot of fast stops, I keep it in L. So 50/50 for me. My guess is that you always drive in L.
Btw thumbs up on your video.

Apparently E-Brake slides don't work in a Volt
