After the BMW dealer gave me a $17,000 estimate for some pretty basic repair work on my 409,000 mile 2000 M5, I was determined to fix it for next to nothing. This M5 is my first BMW so I don't have any experience working on them but as this video will show, everyone should give wrenching a try. You can literally save thousands doing basic car repairs at home and it's pretty fun too. Enjoy!

Wait, $117.80 for two brake bulbs? I understand they can rip off customers on other parts, but bulbs? Even if they have to clean the contacts, $117.80 is crazy 😅😅

I know I'm being an ass, but you have like 100 000+ dollars worth of tools. Of course it would be easy for us to do the same thing if we invested that amount of money in tools to do those jobs. Love the videos tho.

Man I have been paying a lot money to the shop to do the things you are doing for practically half the price, I know you said that everyone can do it (I don't know about that Alex) I wish I can do even half the stuff that you do , maybe it's easier in the US , around here it's just not that common, it doesn't mean that I don't enjoy the heck out of your vids, Rock on Man 🤘

I'm a little confused. I have seen in so many of your videos that you state that you only exclusively use amsoil oil. But in this video you're using liquid Molly for some reason? Why is that Alex. Did you switch to liquid Molly? Love your videos keep up the great work brother

I don't know which bugs me more — that someone would charge $512 to replace an oil level sensor, or that someone would pay it.

I love this video. Learning how to work on your own car is totally worth the effort, and it's super rewarding and gratifying, even it if isn't easy the first time or two. I don't know if there are too many things that I'd say could be "easily" done at home by someone with zero experience, but I would 100% say that anyone who wants to can to a LOT more than most people do, especially if they really understand how to use the internet, and that just watching several videos (vs just the shortest one with the best thumbnail) is advisable, and also if they understand that with cars it's always important to know when to course correct.

I know Alex said it's his first time doing all these things on a BMW, but I think something can be said for at having done them, or similar things, on many other cars, even if they were a different makes (unless he was only addressing people who have worked on other cars before and were just switching makes or something). I work in an office. My high school jobs I've never required me to fix anything mechanical. The first time I changed my own brake pads I also did the rotors. One of the rotors was Stuck, with a capital S, on. I read about the push bolts but no one mentioned that it was most likely the same size bolt as the one that held the caliper to the caliper bracket. I spent forever first beating on the rotor with a mallet, then a hammer before reading about the push, then more time trying every single bolt lying around my house (the hole looked WAY smaller than the caliper bolt, which I did try first, but it felt like it wouldn't go past like 1/4 rotation) before getting mad enough to try to force the caliper bolt through and then finding out that after the first like 7 or 8 cranks it was actually the right size. Then a floating caliper pin was like 100% fused and wouldn't move so I couldn't get the stupid caliper back over the pad. Instead of realizing it wasn't going to move I spent forever spraying stuff on it and beating on it in a vice before I just went and got a new one. Then I didn't know that the little rubber boot didn't come with the new pins, so had to go back again. I wish I would have had and/or known about 6YA back when I started working on my own car.

Time, convenience and confidence is what you’re really paying for… I replaced all four shocks on my z71 in the driveway using only the roadside jack and a rented spring tensioner kit… took me 7 goddamn hours of tiring, sweaty, knuckle busted, mosquito bitten work to do that stupid shit and it would’ve only taken a dealer maybe 1.5 hours total! Okay oil change, wiper blades, light bulbs DIY, but everything else…TAKE MY MONEY WHILE I SIP COFFEES ON THE COUCH!!

Jesus Christ I did it again he says, first time I've heard you talk that way lol. I watch alot of your videos too. You do good work, and I learn alot of you and others. I'm a diy guy and do alot of side work in my garage. I've been getting quite busy with it actually. Thinking about opening my own garage and going for it. Not much I can't do, I just need to buy my lift I want. But I like helping people and fixing cars, I'm a wicked gear head. Local garages charge $75-$80+ a hour, so I decided to go $40 a hour and not to mention I get people in and out, they don't have to wait a couple weeks to get in.
