All right guys, this is super super random. I Was in the middle of filming a video on the Cobra and the 911 and I got a text message from the guys over at Fluid Motor Union that the owner of a GMC Typhoon is at least willing to talk to me now about selling it. So I showed this car on my channel briefly I Think about a year ago it's been sitting in the parking lot over there broken for over a year now, but the owner didn't want to sell. Now it's winter in Chicago and this is sometimes how this happens.
People don't want to store their car and they want to get rid of them. So if he is willing to deal, what do you think you would ask for it realistically I need to run over there, inspect this car and see exactly what I'm dealing with. It looked nice when I drove by, but you never know and then that way I know how much I can offer him for this and if you guys have been watching my channel for a while, you know that the GMC Typhoon is a dream. SUV for me, turbocharged six-cylinder all-wheel drive.
it beat everything when it came out back in the early '90s I've always wanted one but in a special color and this is a very, very special color. So anyway, I text this guy I Have never talked to him before in my life so hopefully he calls us back. In the meantime, we got to get to work. We got to go check out a typhoon.
I Haven't driven this car much since I Fixed up the engine with the low oil pressure and the bearings and all that. Madness We got great oil pressure and a phenomenal sound. Gosh, this car is so awesome! Taking this to go look at a typhoon on a like 40 day sunny day here in Chicago don't get much better. I mean like a 75 day in the summer? that might' be a little better.
So after replacing all of the engines, bar earings were at two bar of oil pressure at about 2700. RPM So that's 29 PSI that that's perfect. That's right where we need to be. Just pulled into the parking lot last time it was over here somewhere.
Oh there it is. There it is. It's like a oh it's it's more of a blue. It's yeah, it's definitely a blue.
I've been looking at so many of these. they have different blues and different greens. This is so cool and it's got the gray bottom all right. Here we go and at first glance I got to say it's pretty straight.
it looks so mean and I love this color and I love the greens as well with the gray cladding on the side. I think it's just so '90s and so retro. but unfortunately this paint is definitely Getting Faded on the hood there and on the roof as well. and it's just been sitting out here for over a year I think I showed this I Don't know 6 to 10 months ago in an E55 video just briefly.
If you guys remember that and it looked better than this. The cladding is in the same condition. It is definitely very very faded. The body looks straight on this side and let's see if the cladding hasn't completely come off.
That's a good sign. That means it's straight A Lot of times this can get Warped as it's just plastic and then you have to replace it or reform it with heat. It's kind of a pain in the butt, but this is really nice. and then I think this Gap is normal to line up with the front bumper. We have a little scuff right there. No big deal. I Don't remember if the grills are normally black on these, they they actually might be. They might just be painted this gray color.
Yeah, that's actually gray that. That's pretty cool. And we have a couple more scuffs right there. Some chips in the paint here? no biggie.
The body lines are really really nice. Look at that. Tesla You could learn a few things from the GMC Typhoon Body Lines This side is straight as well. The tires look to be in good condition.
This wheel is not curb rashed. I Love this style wheel though. I Would definitely leave this or there are some companies that will cut the face off. This is a 16 and then they'll attach it to a larger wheel so the barrel could be like a 17 or an 18 and then they rivet in the face and you can even recess it in for a little bit of a deep dish and then you see the rivets.
It's really cool on the Retro cars so if I get one of these I would consider that. that would be the only thing I would consider for the wheels. otherwise I would just leave them just like that. But look Typhoon! this is so cool.
You guys who've been watching the channel for a while know that I've always wanted one of these typhoons, but my love for this body style started when I was probably like 5 years old. So I was built in 1984 so these were you know, brand new when I was a little little kid and I always loved the Chevy Blazer and it said 4x4 on the back and the GMC Jimmy same thing and I even built a little Pinewood Derby car and wrote 4x4 on the side I still have it I was in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts and stuff. So I was obsessed with this square body style and it's funny because back then I didn't even know that there was a typhoon at all I'd probably never even see seen one but as I got older I'm like no way do they make that square body Chevy Blazer in a super fast all-wheel drive version with a turbo. I'm like that's perfect and when these came out, they spanked everything.
Definitely from 0 to 60 these things would beat Ferraris and Exotics and it was kind of funny and it reminds me a lot of the Buick Grand National because that was faster than everything at the same time. and it was just odd because it's a Buick. It's like a Grandma's Buick This this is similar. it's an SUV and look at the back.
this is so so neat. Oh my gosh. So this glass opens up and then you have a legitimate tailgate. I think how cool is that? Oh man.
I'm totally geeking out here. This thing is an excellent condition. at least the body is. Let's take a peek underneath.
I Haven't heard back from the owner yet. So I Can't you know touch the vehicle or get inside or anything like that? It is still another man's piece of property. Um, but I was given permission just to look at it outside. You know, So far. All right. So this is all fine and dandy. But what's really important, especially living in Chicago is how rotted out is this. What's up with the frame? And so far the frame actually looks pretty good.
This Muffler is shot though. it's got a hole right there. Again, not a big deal, we really just care about the floors. The body mounts are a good sign if these cups are all rotted out and you can poke a screwdriver through them.
You know there's a lot more of that all around the vehicle. but uh, okay, so far so good. Oh man, that is really rotted out. This is another really important area to look at because it's thinner metal.
so this is the lower core support for the radiator and the AC condenser. So if you see this all flaky and rotted, sometimes you can literally bend it off with your fingers. You know that all the brake lines and fuel lines are going to be in rough shape and potentially the frame. This definitely has some corrosion, but it seems pretty solid.
Definitely a little bit of surface rust here and there, but this part of the frame looks really good. We have new sway bar bushings it looks like they've replaced tie rods at some point as well, and the tires are practically new. I'm on the driver side now and the hardware doesn't look too Frozen Together, the frame generally looks really nice and if we go all the way down here, you can kind of see the bottom of the floor as well. That looks good.
There is the transfer case. it still has a catalytic converter over there. A Lot of these typhoons were modified and I think this one is slightly as well and I believe it also has a totally blown up engine. We're going to look into that a little bit later, hopefully, but if it's still got an old catalytic converter, it's a good sign.
Yeah, the only reason why I think that it was modified is because we have some gauges right here. that is an air fuel gauge and I'm going to go ahead and assume that's a boost gauge down there, but let's just take a quick peek through the glass at these seats and they look pretty nice. These are all super comfortable as well and they have gray on the S so they're two-tone seats. I Don't know what year this car is or the mileage at all.
I think there was a difference with the years, but they were really minor changes. So Typhoon guys, what? what year is this one? You could probably tell from something on the outside. So I just got a text back from the owner and he can talk in 10 minutes and I said do you mind if I check out the interior. He said no, not at all.
Probably still smells of mothballs but that comes out but that comes out. That means he's trying to sell this to me right now and you got to understand that. I have been asking for over a year to buy this I've never spoken to him or text with him until today, but this is OJ's client like he brought him this car because there's something severely wrong with the engine and yeah, now he's open to talking and he's telling me the smell will come out. so I don't even know how many miles are on this I just saw the color and I'm like dude, if this thing is available I'm I'm in. Wow though, it was built in October of 91 so it would be a 92. Look at the seats. jeez and the steering wheel and the dash this. Oh and the buttons, you know I Always talk about the white lettering on buttons.
Look at how nice this this is. Oh wow. look at. they set this up for you so you don't rub it out so you can press the outside.
Oh this is sweet. Look at that! Okay I've never actually sat in a GMC Typhoon I've never driven a GMC Typhoon just like the Grand National I want to I want to drive one for the first time that I've bought cuz I already know I'm going to love it. Oh this instrument. oh is that am I reading this right.
Is that 21,000 mil? or did it roll over? No, no no, there's a zero look guys, a lot of these old cars they roll over and it would say 21,000 Mi but the two would be over there and then people list them with that many miles. but they really have 120,000 or 220,000 Dude, does this really only have 21? This would be the lowest mileage old car. I Don't is this too nice? This would be the lowest mileage old car. I I would have ever bought.
It's almost like too nice guys. Oh it's beautiful. It does have an air fuel gauge. we got to pop the hood.
Oh look at this radio. so this is an after Market Alpine radio. but I would totally leave this because it looks like it was put in back in 1992. I Mean it's just a tape deck? This is phenomenal.
God I Wonder how much of that's worth? It's probably worth a ton on. eBay Okay, let's see what's under the hood. Crossing my fingers, it's not super modified. If anyone's modifying this thing, it's going to be me.
But 21,000 Mi I Don't know I don't know. Uh oh Here we go. Found it. Okay there she is 4.3 L And it's funny.
the intake says Cyclone So they had the typhoon and the Cyclone was the pickup truck. Did all the typhoon intake say Cyclone or did they put a cyclone intake on there I thought they had the exact same engine I Don't know all. we have a cold air induction system, a gigantic red horn MSD coil and wires. but what's the turbo looking like? Yeah, this looks like the stock turbo.
We have stock piping here I Think this is the Boost controller from the factory? Yeah, okay. the intercooler also looks Factory Little crusty in the engine, but um yeah, nothing too crazy I think those are newer fuel injectors. Okay, very clean though. I mean overall I mean we can make it look better but uh, the hood pad is still there. that's a good sign and we can see the inside of the fenders. Everything looks good there. I Would venture to say this thing hasn't been wrecked I mean it is. It is really nice.
Look at this Oldsmobile campaign. it had a recall done I Would totally keep this sticker and probably put a little ppf over it to maintain its originality. That is very nice. Oh the original stickers in great shape.
Wow! I Don't know what the guy is going to want but this car without a blown engine and really good paint. just like really nice with 21,000 Mi would go for like 40 Grand I'd say potentially need some paint work. definitely need some engine work. OJ Said where they left off was they needed to remove the cylinder heads to see how bad it was.
So I think it just needs a new engine. but I think that this would maybe be worth like roughly 20 grand. so maybe I go in in at like 16 I got the Grand National for 16 I'll go in at 16 and see what he says if he comes back at 20. I'm doing it I Just pulled up a Carfax let's take a look 1992 Typhoon Turbo.
That's really cool that it says that on the Carfax No accidents, Three service history records 21,000 miles. Okay, everything is green. Check marks were good. It was bought in Ohio originally and then in one year it had 8,000 mil and then 96 19,000 Mi.
So it was like normally driven there for the first few years and then no reporting of mileage so far. Oh no. and then 21,7 70 Mi Here at Fluid and they rode it up for a cylinder head, gaset replaced and all this stuff. I I Don't think they actually got into any of that yet.
They were inspecting all of that stuff. Hm. so 19,000 mi in 96 and almost 22,000 mi in 2024. I mean it's possible the thing's clean.
I mean it is a collectible. It's possible someone bought it and just let it sit in a garage you you know since 1996 and just drove it. You know, a couple hundred miles a year, two 300 miles a year? something like that. I don't know.
All right. Uh, let's let's go. Uh, call this guy. we're going to go inside of the Hamilton Collection garage.
so I'll be in good car company while I make this phone call and hopefully by my first typoon. I am so nervous right now. What's up? Alex hey how are you not too bad? How you doing? doing good doing good? Thank you so much for talking to me about this typhoon. No problem, no problem.
I know it's been a little while I've been eyeing this I'm sure OJ mentioned it to you. Um, because it's been here for for a while. It's G to be going on a year. Yeah, yeah, no that's right because I made a video in the summer over here and I was like oh my gosh a blue typhoon it was in there.
you saw you don't see him too often and it's kind of funny cuz uh, they were talking in the shop when I uh when I talked to him the last time and they're like you would not believe the traffic that this car gets we've got Ferraris we got Lamborghinis we got all this crazy stuff in here and everyone wants to see that car. That's hilarious I thought I was the only weirdo. No, no, there's a group of us. there's a group of us. weirdos. how long have you had this? Um, I got it when I was I think I bought them both the cyclone and typhoon when I was when I got my license I 16 Wait, you bought a cyclone and a typhoon at the same time when you were 16? Yeah, no way. As soon as it came out when I was 13, I started putting some money away. What? dude? that is Amazing! So you're wait.
so you're the original. Are you the original owner or no the of the the Cyclone had 600 miles on it so I would be the second owner on that and also on the Typhoon second owner and I got that one with uh, 10,000 on it. Okay, so does it really have 21,000 miles? That's what it says. Yeah, that's what it says on the odometer.
Okay, yeah, the last Carfax was like 1996 or something so you know? Yeah and I've only put like 3,000 on the Cyclone. Oh wow man that is awesome. What else do you have in your collection? My my goal in life is to have all the cool GM turbo V6 cars. So I have a Grand National and I obviously want a typhoon, a cyclone and an 89 turbo Trans Am that you don't have the Trans Am yet I don't I have a Trans Am with a turbo but it's but it's the wrong year.
it's a 2001. Yeah, not the one that you saw when you were when you were younger. Not that one. but one day.
yeah I I I thought that car was hot too. Oh yeah I definitely want I want it I did before I got these guys I was looking at the national because it came out a couple years earlier. yeah I I I couldn't pull the trigger on that I thought it was cool. It looked tough on the outside but just the the interior just killed me.
Yeah I mean it's You know it's a Regal you know it's an old man old lady car but yeah. I I think that part's cool. You know that's exactly what I said I My buddy had one for sale and it had low miles and I I went over there to see it. I'm like this is like your grandma's sofa.
yeah, like like your grandma s with a steering wheel. No. I I couldn't do it. That describes Interiors yeah I Know what the Interiors were going to be looking like in the in the GM yeah I hear you the cyclone and typhoon which they did quite well in.
yeah they look nice I like the boost gauge on there and everything. It's sweet. So what is wrong with this thing? OJ Just briefly told me a few many months ago that it has an engine issue. Do you know what? Like what happened I broke a ring in cylinder 5 Ah, okay, is this thing? is it modified I saw like the Boost gaug and stuff in there.
No, it's just got a tune on it. It's got the the uh exhaust dump okay intake exhaust tune. Okay, that's that's all that's all it needs for that for that car, right? right? Don't don't to push to too far to the limits, right? So what? What has been your plan I know OJ had mentioned I mean seriously, about a year ago that you were just looking to replace the whole engine is? is that the deal? I don't know I'm kind of leaving it up to them I wanted to keep original numbers. that's why it's been there for a year because they're looking for parts right? because I mean all all it was was I mean broke a ring? it needs to be bored out probably and everything right? Yeah, bored out or yeah, boarded out and sleeved or whatever. Yeah, but I mean all the all the you know, all the parts beyond the cylinder you got to replace because it's got little fragments of metal in it. So yeah, yeah, yeah for sure. Okay yeah. so and is having trouble because I mean they made like I don't know how many tens of thousands of the GMC jimmies? Yeah, but it's a different engine right? you know? And they only made so many? Yeah, you don't see a cyclone or typhoon engine pop up very often.
Yeah, what? I got a buddy that's a fanatic and he was hot after this thing because he said it was one of one of 14 in that silly color i al blue. Okay yeah I think it was one of 14 for that year and that's what I love about those trucks is that they came in weird colors. Yeah, they have like seaweed, green or something. that one's bad I don't like I don't like that one at all.
but they have a couple different greens. a couple different Blues a red, a white, a black. of course you know it was pretty pretty radical back then. to do that, you know, did you see the the Cyclones in I think they were I think they were actually badged maror Really? there was like I want to say there was like three of them that they made.
It would go beyond the the 9 or 98 produced because they they they made those specialty ones and I think they shipped them to uh United Arab Emirates oh wow man is what I thought I heard I'd love to see one of those. So would you consider selling this car? I know like when you first dropped it off it wasn't on your you know wasn't something you were thinking about but it's still not. You know I mean they told me that, told me that you know someone stop by and they were interested and you know B yeah that was you. definitely was you.
Yeah but if if if you were to sell it what what do you think you would ask for it realistically I don't even have a number I have no idea and um when you texted me earlier I I texted my little boy and I was like how much money would you take for that car because it's going to be his yeah he's at school so I didn't I didn't hear back from him yet oh okay yeah I was curious what his number was. okay I don't I don't really have a number on it yeah I don't really care to get rid of it. Definitely not getting definely not getting rid of the Cyclone oh yeah no I get that and they're kind of brothers. So yeah, all these years what number are you looking at because I've had I've had offers like I told you I had that one fanatical guy and he had a bunch of guys in his car club. Yeah I mean b Basically from what I understand that car without a blown engine you know and like perfectly cleaned up with like perfect paint and everything I think is worth like somewhere in the low 40s something like that and so I think with a with a bad engine and like it does need some a little bit of paint work because it's single stage and some of it's kind of fading. yeah what would you what would you do with that paint I think if you did a really quality paint job like you know like A5 to $7,000 paint job where they really don't cut any Corners right? I Don't think it would hurt it too bad, but it would have to be the identical match you know? but you wouldn't? You know you obviously though, you wouldn't be able to sell it as like a super collectible you know? But whatever. You know, most of these people buying these things are just they want to enjoy them. you know? But yeah I think I think that car mint with mint paint and mint.
Everything is 40. So like this car either needs a paint job or you just live with the fact that the paint is you know, faded right and it's obviously got a blown kind of hard to replace engine because even a used engine is like 10 grand when they pop up. you know I don't know I'm I'm like I would be for something like this considering everything that it needs done I'd be somewhere in like the 16 range, something like that. okay and then I would you know then after the restoration it would just bring it back up to its normal value.
it wouldn't be anything that would be I think that would just be a fair price. it wouldn't be like a flipper price, you know? Yeah gotcha. I mean well it's in there to get back to original running condition right? And the you saw the interior. it's nice.
it's very nice. yeah it's it's definitely clean. Yeah, so it's in there to get back to original running condition. So the only issue is the paint on it and that's that whether you want to do it or don't want to do it.
Yeah yeah. but in running condition with with paint the way it is, What? What's your number? I mean personally I wouldn't buy it in that condition because like for me, it's the adventure of like restoring this and then keeping it forever. you know I personally wouldn't buy it if someone else did the engine because I'm a mechanic I would love to get my hands in there and really get to know it and treat it right and like to me, the cars that I keep the longest or forever are the ones that I've just done everything to. so if someone else does it I I could go out and buy anyone's typhoon you know, right? Uh, but I'm specifically looking for one that's broken but fixable you know and that's got a cool passionate history like yourself like hey, I love this car it but it's maybe it's it's just a little bit too much I don't really want to deal with it but you know it's going to go to like the best home ever, right? So that would be me. That's kind of where I was at with it if I were to sell it and especially that price. but if I were to sell it, it'd be somethingone that's going to keep it and appreciate it. Yeah, and mine. you know with me you kind of a cool little perk is that you'd be able to see it live on on.
YouTube Forever you know what I mean like so it would be in all my videos. it'd be in the background even when it's done next to the Grand National and a lot of people will see it here. the story, even just here, the history of you and you know and and stuff like that so it's it's those are like you pain it I don't know I would first I would definitely try to clean it and buff it by hand I would be very very delicate I would do all the mechanical stuff first and then kind of reassess like maybe a year from now you know or something like after. it's all like 100% mechanical done.
you know? Yeah, gotcha gotcha. That's what I would do well appreciate your interest. Yeah so let me know. talking to someone that cares about these stupid cars as much as I do I do I Definitely do check out some of the videos like if you watch the DeLorean Series this would be very similar to that and how I treat it and my excitement and passion and and stuff for it.
So I'm I'm curious to see uh because I just started that video I was like just curious to see the inside and outside. oh man it's it was. It was ratty but it's nice. now.
do you have the uh what's it called the flux capacitor I don't I haven't done any of that but I did get a Hoverboard and I did dress up as Marty McFly and I parked the thing on my the front lawn of my house for holid as a Halloween decoration. so I did that. oh that's funny. yeah but well thanks brother I appreciate it and call me Text me anytime.
All right, cool, cool man. All right Thanks man. All right bye okay, bye oh man. Okay, so this is why he's been hesitant over the last year.
This is obviously sentimental I didn't realize he owned it this long and he had a kid that he would maybe give it to. It does sound like they're thinking about it I mean if we're talking numbers he didn't say no and he took the call. and honestly I I really would be a good candidate I don't know I don't have to convince you guys. you guys know what I would do with this thing I would cherish it.

I've owned the longest out of my entire fleet so we'll definitely hang on to that guy.
And in the meantime I am looking at my phone all the time to see if this guy will text me but I don't know. we'll see. The hunt continues for a cool colored typhoon that needs some mechanical love. For viewer information what octane fuel are you using because it does make a significant difference i didnt hear you state this. At any point in time and so everyone else is aware the power specs that volkswagen gives out is on 93 octane though the fuel filler door is labeled that you can use low grade 87 octane but you will have a loss of horsepower and torque so the ecu detects the octane content and adjust the timing to compensate.
Just get a LU3 with marine intake for port efi
