The first video on the Mystery Auction Firebird.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNUiejYMdkY
After buying a custom-built mystery 1985 Firebird Trans Am from the salvage auction I started to discover it's history. The builder of this car reached out to tell me all about the project that took him 3 years to build and was presented to Pontiac in the early 90s. I thought it was related to the Pontiac Banshee concept and I was right! The builder is also a big name in the Knight Rider KITT community and so in this video, you learn the history of the car while we try and get the built crate engine started. That's right the long-time previous owner put over $10,000 into this car including a built engine, transmission and more. For $1,100 this is a steal especially if it runs. I dig deep with a boroscope and check off all the ideas I had and you guys had as to why this engine seems locked up, and the end result is pretty awesome. Lack of oil pressure is probably what caused the engne issue……ya.

Looks like the starter shaft is twisted as mentioned and it causes the gear to turn slightly when moving in and out so once the gear is out against the flywheel teeth the starter gewr wants to turn on it's way back in therefore binds in the flywheel gear. Change the starter and all should be fine. That starter probably was probably damaged on the first tries to turnnthe engine after sitting so long and who knows, it might of got damaged by this new owner if no one else started it since 2018.

A couple things: I know this is an old video, but when you are dealing with high-performance motors that operate in harsh conditions, there is likely to be very fine metal dust from parts wearing out, which you can't feel or see. Drop a rare earth magnet into your non-metallic oil recovery container, shake it around for a bit, then drain the oil and recover the magnet. Any parts of your engine or bearings will be stuck to it. Now, some wear is inevitable, so if you find very fine metal dust, don't freak out. It's the larger particles that might be concerning. Also, when you do the oil change, cut the oil filter apart where the can is bonded to the mounting plate, put a larger rare earth magnet in a pair of needle-nose vise grips, and run it up and down the folds of the filter, inside and out. Any large particles that the filter has trapped will be revealed.

The squeaking on a very hard-to-turn motor is usually the piston skirts seizing against the cylinder walls, not the piston rings. Piston rings will rust in place and seize a motor such that you have to disassemble it to free the parts. But I have successfully removed the heads from a SBC, and after pouring oil into all the cylinders, used a sledgehammer and a length of 2 x 4, to pound the pistons back down into the cylinders, following the firing order, pouring oil in as I went. Believe it or not, I didn't break anything, bolted the engine back together with the old head gaskets (we had no money and nothing to lose on this motor), and it started up and purred like a kitten. Granted, this is a best case, got super lucky scenario, but it also demonstrates what a great and forgiving design the small block Chevy is.

I'm guessing now that yours it might have spun a bearing.
