Last year i bought a 2012 chevy caprice ppv and my goal was to make it a fast cop car taking inspiration from the souped up 1987 caprice in the movie black sheep. Now these cars come with a 355 horsepower 6 liter ls engine, but that wasn't enough. So i removed the engine installed the biggest cam. I could possibly fit paired that up with a 3500 stall billet torque converter, long, tube, headers, a ram air intake and after some tuning on the dyno it put down an impressive 460 horsepower to the wheels.

Now. I love my caprice and it's a fast car, but then this happened. To be honest, i can't be mad. As my e55 amg station wagon is factory supercharged and has some decent mods, but whenever one of my cars gets beat by one of my other cars, i feel the need to do something about it, and so in this video we're gon na make my chevy caprice.

Just a little faster, just just a tiny wee bit faster and the way we're gon na do. This is by using a good quality synthetic oil that can free up a horsepower or two and by this nitrous lots and lots of nitrous all right. So i changed the oil a couple of times since i did the camshaft and all the engine work now we're gon na get the good stuff in here and it's the first time. I've had it up in the air in months and it is bone dry, no leaks, no, nothing looking good, no funnel, no funnel no funnel! No funnel! I made it now.

You guys have probably noticed i'm using amsoil synthetic on my entire fleet, including my european cars, and i just think it's the best synthetic oil out there. So i've done a bunch of research i'll leave. You guys some articles and some videos down below. If you want to take a look and decide for yourself, but this stuff seems to come out ahead against pretty much everything so i have switched over all of my cars to amsoil and last year i became an amsoil dealer.

You put it here for us to test fuel pressure, but it can do just so much more. Your service just isn't required anymore schrader valve, but i'll give you a good spot in the glove box. Don't worry all right, guys we're getting right into this nitrous install! Oh and we have normal back seats for the caprice. Look at how nice these are yes, so my kids are going to be able to go for a ride, no more prisoner cell.

I already took the bolts out - let's just rip this guy out of here. If only if only this guy could talk what stories would it tell us some pretty crazy ones, i'm sure, but here we go. This is what we have behind the plastic prisoner seats of a 2012 chevy caprice. They cut the seat belts out of here, which is kind of a shame, because i need them, but luckily i found some used ones, so we have seat belts.
We have normal seats going in the caprice and what's awesome about working on a car like this and doing wiring and running nitrous lines. Is that they've done much worse? The police departments are running all sorts of equipment, so we have all these harnesses that are just cut and doing nothing. So we can run pretty much everything through here. It's all just cheap plastic that pops right up.

This is gon na, be probably the easiest nitrous kit install in the entire world, and i can't wait to do it very excited about this. We're gon na add a bunch more power. I think i have jets uh from 75 horsepower to 150 horsepower and just about the same torque and we're kicking this right off with our fuel. The most important part is getting fuel into the engine when we're spraying nitrous otherwise things blow up.

So this is one of the reasons i like the zex kit. This is a blackout kit and it's actually a recycled nitrous kit. This was on my c43 amg like two three years ago. If you guys remember that - and i took it off that car before i sold it, knowing that one day, i'd have something else to put it on, and that is the capri.

So what i really like about this kit is that the fuel and the nitrous solenoid are built right into this box, and this has the ability to sense nitrous pressure going in and that way it can adjust the amount of fuel that it's delivering to the engine. So you're never running too lean or too rich, depending on your bottle pressure, which can vary due to temperature. So right here is our bottle and you'll see here that i have a bottle: heater strap to it, so this thing gets really hot and it'll raise the temperature. So in the morning, if this bottle is cold, it might be around - i don't know 600 psi or so we want it to run ideally around 900.

So we'll turn the bottle heater on and it'll turn off automatically. So it knows the ideal temperature which i think is 900 - i'm not really sure. Maybe 950. um it'll keep it right there, but when the bottle gets low, the pressure decreases and if you're, using kind of an older nitrous kit that doesn't have this controller.

It's going to spray the exact same amount of fuel, even though you're getting less nitrous, which means you're going to run rich and that can cause issues as well. So big fan of this, not sponsored oh and if you guys have never installed a nitrous kit before i highly recommend you add it to your bucket list of car things to do now. I personally, like boost a lot better, but it is hard to deny that in a few short hours we will safely have roughly 100 more wheel horsepower for just a few hundred dollars. So you can get a nitrous kit for like three four hundred bucks.
I think this one when i got it a couple years ago, was like 650 700, so a little bit more, but nothing compared to a turbo kit or a supercharger kit, and if you do it right, it is safe. So speaking of that, something that's really important is that you install colder spark plugs. So when i did the cam shaft and everything i installed, one step colder plugs and you're doing that, so you don't detonate and destroy your engine, so very, very important to swap out the spark plugs. It is very cheap insurance when running boost or nitrous okay.

So the first step of the install is mounting the nitrous bottle, and the most important thing to consider here is the angle in which the bottle lays. So there are many places you can mount your bottle, but you just got to make sure that it's on an angle like this, so the bottle has a siphon tube in it, and the bottom of that tube is right around there to make sure that you're using Every last drop of nitrous, so, as you can see here, the brackets in the front are taller than the ones in the rear to give it that angle, and then you also want to mount the bottle so that the back of the bottle is at the back Of the car so that when you launch all the nitrous is moving to the back and getting sucked up by the siphon tube now, like i said you can mount this bottle practically anywhere. You want a lot of people, will remove the spare tire and mount it down there, but i want this car to still be 100 usable, so i need my spare tire. I don't want to mount it on the floor.

That goes over this because i don't want to take up a ton of trunk space, so i'm choosing this spot now. The one and only downside for me is you just got to reach in there a little bit to open the bottle, but no big deal realistically. If you're going to the drag strip you're going to open your bottle once and you end it, if you tighten your fittings, you can leave this bottle open for days. If you want to, and you shouldn't have any leaks whatsoever i'll also probably flip my gauge around.

So i can see it but with the automatic bottle heater that i'm using it's going to put it at the proper temperature and pressure anyway and with this x kit it's going to adjust regardless. So it's not a big deal that i don't always have this gauge right in my face, all right guys. So what you just saw is the installation of a nutsert, so these are really really helpful when you can't get to the bottom side of the panel that you need to bolt something to so normally, i would just use a bolt and a washer on the other Side, but i can't really get from underneath there, so a nutsert comes in handy. You can also use a self-tapping screw if you'd like, but this is just kind of a little bit more professional and the last step with the tool made sure that the nutsert was secure in the sheet metal panel of the trunk here.
So it's not spinning, as i spin the bolt and i'll be able to tighten these up really nicely with a nice and professional bottle mount. So i have two more holes to drill and we're done with the bottle. Where are you nitrous line? Oh got it so, with the nitrous bottle mounted we needed to figure out how to get the nitrous to our engine. So i ran this nitrous hose through a factory hole in the firewall with a nice rubber grommet.

So we're gon na mount the nitrous controller, solenoid module box somewhere over here, and this is gon na connect right to it pretty easy all right. So now that we have our nitrous line ran through the firewall, we have to think about where we're going to mount. The controller that houses the solenoid, so there are a few things to consider here. We have a purge that is going to come out this way.

We only get a couple feet of hose and then there'll be a line somewhere over. Here we have to consider the fuel line which we get quite a bit of fuel line, so that's no big deal but also the nozzle. So i have it connected right now to the box and it's got to go somewhere in here. So we don't have too much room, so i think out of all the places right about here is best.

We can get all of our lines to connect no problem, um and everything should reach. Now. This thing is pretty light, so we don't need to use all four of the mounting brackets we're just gon na use a couple self tappers somewhere in this area and call it good all right, our controller rock solid, not going anywhere mounted really nicely. Now we are going to run our nitrous line, all stealth mode back here, underneath the fender, not that it makes any difference.

Someone can see that right there not trying to hide much here, not gon na lie, and we connect this nitrous line right here. All right. We have our fuel line going in, we have our nitrous line going in and if only this was a little bit wider, we could literally snap this in just like factory really cool so anytime. I can.

I try to use factory grounds and we have one right here and this isn't long enough. This was in the c43, and i had it cut perfectly for that car and it's just off a little bit, and i couldn't move this up, or these would be hitting right here. So we're gon na have to extend this wiring close, but no cigar. Now i totally forgot to bring any black wiring, but that is not a problem, because our caprice has a bunch in stock.

There we go. Something i like to do is cut off the colorful plastic sleeves that come on most of these eyelet connectors and i just use a little piece of shrink, wrap and it looks totally factory now something that's not gon. Na look factory at all is our nitrous nozzle, which we need to drill into our intake somewhere. So you're supposed to be a few inches away from the throttle body.

Some people say six to ten, it kind of varies, i've done way closer and in this case we're going to have to do the same, because we don't have much of an intake track and we have a mass airflow sensor that we can't be spraying fuel on. So let me show you what's going on in here all right, so this is our mass airflow sensor, so we don't want to spray fuel directly on the sensor itself. It can damage it now if you're running a dry, nitrous kit that refers to a kit that only supplies you with a nitrous nozzle and the additional fueling is done through the engine's computer. So you do spray the nitrous over the mass airflow sensor in that case and then the engine's computer's able to adjust fueling and inject more fuel via your fuel injectors.
So we are running a wet kit, so we want to drill in our nozzle after the mass airflow sensor, so we're gon na still use this housing because we really don't have anywhere else to drill it in. But we just don't want the nozzle before the actual sensor now i'd love to have the nozzle somewhere on the top side and just not even mess with any of this here. It would just be much nicer and we may do that except. I have to think about closing the hood, so we can't just simply put this guy right here and call it a day.

The hood probably won't close all right, so we're going to be drilling this nozzle into the bottom. I've marked it made sure the nozzle wasn't going to interfere with anything a pilot hole there before we use a larger drill bit to install this little fitting, i'm going to try and tap this first just for the nozzle okay. So what i'm curious to see is how snug does this nozzle fit in to the threads of a plastic mass airflow sensor housing, because it's really thick? Oh, it's nice, it's nice! Now the alternative is drilling a larger hole and inserting this from the bottom and then the nozzle screws into this, and you have a nut that goes on top now. There really isn't much of a chance of this dropping into the intake and getting sucked up by your engine, because it's still going to be connected to the nozzle itself, but less is more.

This is going to be really tight, i'll use a little bit of sealant as well, and i think this will just look cleaner all right, so we have our nozzle fully installed. As you can see, it's going to be spraying towards the intake manifold. That's what you want and i've installed our jets, so this is going to be a 75 horsepower shot to start with. I'm sure we will go way higher than that, but we have a 26 fuel jet and a 40 nitrous jet and there's a chart.

So you got to make sure you get this right and you can mess this up. These are interchangeable and you don't want to spray way more nitrous than fuel or your engine will go. Kaboom activation switch. Where are you? Ah, there we go coming through yeah system activated, we got our purge button done too, and the purge circuit is based off of the arming switch circuit since you'll never be purging and spraying nitrous into the motor at the same time.
So that way, my kids or my nephews won't just come in here and press my purge button all the time the keys got to be on this has got to be flipped up so now. I guess they only have like two steps in order to purchase the system and when they do inevitably purge the nitrous from my car, they're gon na be spraying. Whoever is in front of them check this out. I ran my purge line right above the chevy logo.

We'll see how this looks later in this video we'll try running it down here i was even thinking of poking a hole in here. We can get pretty creative with the purge system, but there is our solenoid and here's the setup up close. So i just tapped in underneath here this is steel, nothing in the way, so we have a solidly mounted solenoid. I just have to run uh the power and ground over yonder uh for that and right now we have the activation wire.

That is all wired up powered up. This is the nitrous purge right here. So all you got to do is connect your power from the purge switch to either one of these wires and then ground it and you're done all right guys. So all the wiring under the hood is almost done.

We just need to get a wide open, throttle reference signal. So, on old school setups, where you have a cable driven throttle body, you will actually use a micro switch that physically gets pushed when you go wide open throttle by either the throttle body itself. Some people put it under the pedal. I like doing it under the hood, but in this case we have an electronic throttle body and the zex kit is meant to work with these.

So we can actually tap in to a wire on the harness of the throttle body, and this is going to give us our voltage sweep indicating to the pcm and now the zex box, when we're at wide open throttle. Now, since this is a universal kit, i got a couple years ago for a c43 amg. I didn't know on these electronic throttle body cars. You need to wire in a resistor, otherwise you can set a check engine light and disturb the circuitry going back to the pcm.

That reads the throttle position, so we don't want to do that. I contacted zach's. Normally the kit for this particular vehicle for the pontiac g8 same thing would come with this little resistor harness, but just on the fly i had to make my own it's a 82k ohm resistor. I didn't have that.

I had an 80 and two 1000 so anyway, i wired that in and we will shrink wrap it, of course, and i'm going to run a longer black wire all the way around there and kind of hide it. So we don't have a wire going from here over the engine to connect to the throttle body wiring. I think that wouldn't look too good heat shrink. People heat shrink.

Look at how nice that looks totally hiding the fact that i have a bunch of resistors wired in there. So i just used a wire tap to the purple wire going to the throttle body. We have hidden the wire under the cowl and we have a nice corrugated tube here to hide all the rest of the wiring. That's going inside of the fender.
So overall i think it's a very, very clean setup. Let's hook up the bottle and test out the purge. Yes, that is awesome. I like how it kind of points up a little bit too.

That's really really cool. I think it's in a great spot. So this is what it looks like you can see the condensation there. This was completely frozen for about 30 seconds after i was done, but really cool and we don't have any issues with the hood lining up.

The nozzle is just hanging out right here. No one would have any idea, you know. Unless they saw this video, then they would know all right guys. So i've checked everything for leaks.

We are good to go. Our final step here is to program the zex box to read wide open throttle. So it's been a couple years since i did this, but we're gon na turn ignition on and we're gon na activate the system. Okay.

So it's telling us it's programmed because i think it remembered it from the last one, but they say to press and hold this and it's gon na be red. Now we're going back in the car 10 seconds. One two all right! I think that's ten there's my wagon restoration project by the way, no dent in the fender that video is coming out soon. Okay, so this should be going red, green off, red, green, off, perfect activate, and now, if we hit this, we should hear some clicks.

Whoa yeah, we definitely heard something: it's got a little bit of pressure still left in the system, so that works everything's, good, all right so now with it armed it is a solid, green light telling us it's armed and ready to give you tons and tons of Power so at this point i am going to wrap up the entire interior all right guys. We had to forgo the interior momentarily because i was thinking so much louder with no seats um, it might rain soon. So i want to go for a ride and test out the nitrous before it rains and then we'll mess with the interior a couple things before we get to the highway. You don't want to use nitrous unless you're at wide open throttle, which is why all these kits have some sort of wide open throttle switch, and you also shouldn't spray nitrous at a very low rpm um.

So typically, it's like you don't want to spray under 3000 ish, so you can get what's called a window switch which will prevent the nitrous from spraying under whatever rpm you choose. In my case, i didn't do that because i have a pretty loose stall converter. It's like a 3500 stall um, so it flashes up there very quickly. So i don't think i need it.

I've done kids like this before. Without it, it's been fine but uh. Just a couple more safety things for you before you go blow your car to pieces, but seriously nitrous is safe. You can melt down an engine, boosting it and not tuning it properly.
There's all sorts of ways uh to blow up an engine, and i'm now gon na knock on my steering wheel, because i probably jinxed myself all right so we're in performance transmission, all right that is with no nitrous and i put it in low. I want to see: will it ever shift? No, all right, so we'll keep it in regular drive. There isn't a way to manually shift into gears. It kind of stinks, i'd like to put it and hold it in a gear before we spray, but it's not gon na happen, probably some kind of controller.

You can get to manually switch this or maybe even some fancy pedals or something, but we don't got that all right, arming switch is on wish. You guys can see that just purge just kind of comes rushing towards the windshield. I'm going gon na get some pretty decent speed before we whack it. I think we're gon na have some serious traction issues.

Let's, let's hit it without the nitrous first. Here we go wow. This thing is so so loud without seats, it's crazy all right! So now we have the nitrous on we'll slow down to about the same speed. The legal speed limit the entire time nervous.

I don't know why i'm always nervous with nitrous. For the first time, too, many fast and furious movies, all right here we go okay, that was awesome. That was awesome all right turn. It off turn it off.

So those are the 75 pills in there and i think all right i get into it: okay, okay. Okay, i hope i hope the mic isn't just blowing out right now, but this thing just sounds like a top fuel dragster. Oh, this is great. I miss nitrous.

I miss nitrous. We need more, though we need more 75 shot. I think our bottle pressure is only around like 700 or something the bottle was probably half-ish full. Something like that all right guys.

I just looked everything over perfect: nothing fell apart, we didn't blow the engine up sounds so good very loud. This thing is so so loud um. Our bottle pressure is down to 700 right now, so it was probably at 800 or something at the at the most, so we're probably getting a little less than a 75 shot, but you can definitely still feel it 150. Just really just throws you back, but i may reduce the timing a little bit for the 150 shot uh.

You know, so we keep this l 77 intact. So i'm going to try and get a race now that this has nitrous against the e55 wagon. Again, i got to talk to its owner. That's me, yes, the answer is yes, you can race the e55 wagon and i might actually do it at the track.

So i have drag radials on the way for this caprice because we're spinning it we're even spinning on the highway when i was punching it at the legal speed limit around 50-ish and it was spinning the tires. So we got some drag radials on the way um. I have some cosmetic stuff i'm going to do to this car. It's going to have the legit streetcars logo on the front doors.

We may do some other cool stuff as well. I got a headliner to fix the back seat to button up so lots of stuff going on with the caprice uh and then i want to see what it runs at the track and i want to see if it'll beat the wagon, which i definitely think it Will especially if we up the uh, the nitrous pills i just made a few more pulls just want to check everything over make sure we are a-okay. Nitrous kit is still armed, no leaks, nothing rubbing on anything. The nozzles are right down there and she runs perfect.
We have our little purge and, let's just give it one more sound clip from the back. I absolutely love this caprice, it's one of those cars that you can beat on and not feel bad about it because it was a cop car. It's seen much worse. It's probably got like 10 holes drilled into it for lights and sirens and equipment.

The best analogy i can come up with just right now is say: you're in your nice, normal car and you pull off on the side of the highway and there's dirt, and there's rocks and you're worried that if you take off too fast you're gon na kick That stuff up and nick your paint, this car begs you to get sideways, to have fun to get dirty, and now it's got a big cam headers, a converter, nitrous, it's an ls car with a decent transmission. It is a blast to own and i highly recommend, if you guys run into one of these at the auctions, there's still some around. They only made like 17 000 of these and they were all sold directly to police departments, but now that they are retiring them, you can get some pretty good deals. The prices have gone up quite a bit because people have figured out it's basically a long.

Pontiac. G8 or a fifth generation camaro uh, but i've seen guys snag these for like five six grand with higher mileage at the auction, you will not regret it they're comfortable. I love it anyway.     You are VERY lucky you didn’t blow it up. Usually for Nitrous you need to file the Piston Rings down to prevent them from butting and cracking the pistons. Engine Masters did a video where the Cracked a piston because of Nitrous.
