All right guys! I think I figured out how to get the Cobra started I think or we might need to go to plan B But check this out in the last video. I Installed a new forged engine to replace the slightly I mean completely destroyed old engine. It cranked over and all was good with the world except I Wasn't able to get this stupid red theft light to stop flashing. but check this out if we remove the aftermarket Eom chip goodbye and then turn the ignition on.
We get the theft light here for a couple of seconds and then it goes away. That is normal and we have mileage. but if I plug this back in and then key it on, no mileage theft light flashing. The Paat system or passive anti- theft system was an early Ford immobilizer system that needs to communicate with the instrument cluster.
If it doesn't, you won't see the mileage and the car won't start with the aftermarket Eom chip out of the ECU I was able to go through the path system key programming procedure and that's why we don't get the theft light anymore. Now you know I already tried to start this but check it out, we don't get any fuel pumps still and of course it doesn't start. I can get the fuel pump to come on though. I Found the fuel pump relay here and if I run its own separate ground, we got a fuel pump.
It works so that has to be grounding through the aftermarket engine computer that looks like this. So it's very possible that the ground circuit inside of this computer is bad, and that's why it's not able to control the fuel pump. The big question is now that the Pats is programmed, will we get injector pulse with when the Pats isn't programmed? it shuts down the fuel injectors so the car won't start. We have our noid light connected.
Let's see if this flashes. No, No. That is really frustrating. We still don't have injector pulsewidth with the PAT system programmed.
I Think we're going to go to plan B Let me let me show you why I've had a little bit of time to look over the wiring job for the Standalone ECU So I removed the fender liner here. There is a lot more of that kind of stuff, but just take a look at the wiring guys. it's it's really bad. These are grounds just kind of screwed right into a painted panel and this is hilarious.
I Found what they rigged up for an engine fan relay and look at the ground. It is on the plastic. It's literally screwed into the plastic retaining portion of the relay. And if I take the ground off, watch this.
The engine fans kick on. I Yeah so I don't know, You remove the ground from here and the fans kick on. I've never seen ground removal as an activation method I Yeah I Got nothing all right. just grounded it so we've turned our fans off.
Little reversal they did there I see what you're doing and then because of the stand. Standalone We have this just big conglomeration of wiring harnesses going everywhere. they look really nasty and I found a few things like this: this is a factory engine harness that I believe they just lopped off and taped or something I don't know why and the aftermarket ECU connects to your 1993 computer with these serial data Port connectors I'm I'm not exactly sure what this box is and just look at all of this. just just garbage. We have wire taps all over the place, there are cut wires in the harness and a lot of the wiring is damaged as well. All for that. Standalone Oh, and did I mention that the Standalone itself looked like something Indiana Jones discovered in some abandoned Temple Temple of Doom Best one. All right.
So no more messing around, no more joshing around. All right. I'm pushing the car up so we can open up the doors and we are stripping this car of this ancient harness and and we're going to go back together with with also an ancient harness but a factory Ford ancient harness. All right and I can't keep keep this from you guys any longer.
look at the new Wheels I Got the 0304 Terminator Cobra Wheels in Chrome with a deep dish. The fronts are in the box as well. Brand new Drag Radal. Cannot wait so I'm still waiting on some of the parts.
but what we have here is the engine computer harness from a 2003 or 2004 Mach One with an automatic transmission. So they made a Mach 1 with this exact same dual overhead cam engine but an automatic transmission which is what this car has. So without further Ado Let's remove this entire mess of a harness. I'm starting off with the injectors.
This is going to be so satisfying. To get this all out on the ground, it's going to be oh man, it's going to look so bad it already does look so bad. Get out of here. Get out.
Leave my Cobra We're also going to be ripping out the Viper alarm system from like 1999. Here's the speaker. almost hit my other car. look yeah, this just grounds drilled in all over the place.
We do not need that. Sometimes you just need the world's longest screwdriver. Here you go this: Viper alarm wasn't working I replaced the batteries in it and these can just be a lot of trouble. Oh and this is kind of funny.
Watch this. They grabbed power for so many things from this one terminal. Will'll be able to eliminate a lot of this. So many zip ties everywhere.
You don't know how good this feels. Guys, All right. I Know some of you guys had commented about me going with an aftermarket ECU a newer one like a Holly or something like that. Those work really well.
They're awesome. But the reason I just want to go back to stock is Simplicity and the fact that we can use a program like HP tuners or SC or something like that to just tune the factory computer. We're well within the power parameters of doing that. We have the technology now.
so I just I just want to clean factory look. Oh you know what else? I Get to get rid of guys this. Oh look at this. look at this goodness in here.
Yes! Okay so this. wow. this is a big custom plate or something to mount the MSD and then this is a factory. Motorcraft Park Oh okay, lots of connectors here. goodbye MSD and they already butt connected these in so we'll cut them out. Okay, what do we have here? Yeah, so this is a factory ignition control module. but I Don't believe this would have come on this car from the factory. I think they added it because they were running the MSD You saw this on older cars but this says coil unplug which would be controlled with the engine's computer.
So I think we can eliminate this as well. Just like you guys can eliminate some debt with today's video sponsor. So a big thanks to PDS De for sponsoring this video. Now let's get back to some. Cobra I Got to do a little bit of housekeeping here. There are pine needles and dirt everywhere.
Luckily it's all dry though. kind of just goes away easily. I Found another relay here that the ground is bolted to the plastic tab on the relay and here's a ground that that's pretty nice. and I got that relay out and now all these grounds are coming out too.
Probably weren't making a very good connection. Yeah. I don't know what's worse this or or the space van and they have a bolt with multiple nuts, just grounding all sorts of things. probably the space man.
Oh this is so fun guys. Get out! Okay, there we go. Some of this stuff is just not worth trying to route through. it's just it's so hacked.
I Just disconnected all the ignition coils that's all coming out with this that went to the MSD partially. I Don't know. whatever. We're making a pile so they're pulling power for about 43 different things from this one.
Junction block here so this will be nice to get rid of. This is a factory post for this fuse box. so I get I get what they're going for here I would use this too, just not for this many things. Wow, Is that all aftermarket? Yeah.
I think so. I think they got four things coming here. These are the only two that would be here from the factory. Okay, cool.
Clean up in in aisle 99 99 Cobra the aisle of this car. All right. that's that factory cover can slide back on. Normally awesome that's coming out there that's coming out there. This was the fuel pump relay which may end up still using so hang on a second. Okay, this this one's nice we're going to. we're going to hang on to this one. I Freed up another big chunk of wires.
Oh yeah, this is beautiful guys now. I'm just going around unplugging everything from this harness that we're getting rid of. Yeah. Sor sorry paint once this thing runs and drives.
I'm definitely going to be doing a detail video on it. This is probably the most scratched up car I've ever owned. I mean look at the swirls guys, it's amazing. but the clear coat is fine.
This is going to be very satisfying one step at a time though. Alex It doesn't run, not even close. Okay This looks like part of the factory harness that was on this car cuz this is a mass airf flow sensor and this is the camp position sensor and these two were not being used. The position sensor with the aftermarket engine computer was not being used at all, just unplugged.
Oh my gosh, what in the world? So I do have to be kind of careful taking this old harness out because it's hard to tell sometimes what's Factory and what's not. So I thought this was aftermarket. It leads up into here, which is Factory but it looks like they gutted a bunch of wires out of this. Factory connector.
This is what the factory connector should have in it. so they've kind of just like assimilated this harness into the car. It was the board the board from Star Trek that did all of this. Oh by the way, I got my other harness now.
so we have the engine side as well. so all of the fuel injector connectors and the coil connectors and all that good stuff. So we have. We have all the harnesses we'd ever need to just bathe yourself in harnesses.
Just look at this conglomeration of junk. Oh my gosh. Okay Factory engine computer. It says beef on it.
beef. It's what's for dinner. So where is that chicken? I Don't know pork. remember industry is paying for advertisement I Figured out what this green switch does.
The two wires lead to this beef box and then one of the wires goes into the factory body harness. where I think they just cut this wire unfortunately out of here. so I'll have to save it. So I'm thinking they were using this as a torque converter lockup switch.
so at the drag strip at the top of third gear or whatever they would lock up the converter, add a little bit a mile an hour on that time slip. At least that's what I'm thinking because I I did the same same thing on the Trans Am except on the TA The transmission lockup switch is the resume accelerator button on the cruise control stock and this is for the transmission brake. That way you can have your hand on the steering wheel at all times. It's really nice.
Either way. I Got to snip this. We'll come back to it later so I can reconnect it to right there where they cut it out of the factory connector and now I should be able to remove the beef box. should? Okay, hang on. Bam Bam There we go. All right, she's out. I'm going to venture to say that this control unit doesn't work anymore. It's sounds like it's got marbles in it.
It's It's in pretty rough shape. Good night buddy. I'm almost able to remove the entire aftermarket engine harness. but I want to take off this upper plenum? It's going to make it a lot easier to get to some of the electrical connectors for the fuel injectors.
and we may have to swap the fuel injectors too. Couple of plugs here and bada bing bada boom she's gone. Oh, this makes it so much easier. These fuel injector connectors are a pain.
With that on, now we can unravel some more madness. There we go. I'm going to take this air filter out. It definitely needs a cleaning and we'll pop this guy out.
Sounded kind of cool. Oh, get out All right. This is the Hacked up. Factory Ford ECU harness.
All right. So the main engine harness came out this way. This aftermarket one is. it's going out that way.
Get out of my Mustang a relic of the past. Oh, it's beautiful. Got it? Okay, yeah, I had to go this way because I couldn't get these connectors off of this rusted computer. It's just all rusted together.
I Think this is it for the pile. All right. So this is everything I've ripped out of the Cobra I May have been able to save this one Factory harness but it was so questionable because they spliced into so many areas. Just easier to get a new one.
And these harnesses are cheap. I got one of them for like 75 bucks. One of them for 90. All right.
you guys remember the uh, the ECU harness that I literally just ripped out of the Cobra I I apologize I I need it I need it. The one I got is not going to work I'm not exactly sure why this is. it has to be a difference in year, but this is a 99 harness. This was out of like an' 03 and this goes to the body harness.
Completely different connectors. All the wires are different colors as well. This is the engine fan connector on the new harness. This is what we have in the car.
This plugs directly into the Ford fan. The AC connector is different. There's a bunch of other different connectors. It's going to be much easier for me to fix this one than to try and dein and figure out all the madness of a 4-year difference in engine harness and whatever Ford did.
So Okay, that's fun. It's a lot of fun guys. Don't don't buy old abandoned cars that have had Standalone ecus in them and all this crazy wiring trying to retrace someone else's work. Is it stinks? It really does.
look at all this Yay! I Peeled back the harness and found a ton of hackery. These are all wires that were spliced into or cut in half by the previous owner to run somewhere else. but luckily they're all here and colors match up and everything. So let's get snip and a strip. A lot of this. I Have to add little extensions to. Unfortunately there we go. Solder is melted, are good, all right.
I'm going to do that. Uh I don't know. about 12 more times in here we'll wrap it up, make it look pretty, do a couple other ones, and then it's it's ready to go right back in. And just like that, the old harness is all fixed up.
So I had to make a total of 10 wiring repairs. We've wrapped this all up, it looks much much better and now we can go back in the car. So it does stink that I had to take this out, but honestly it was a lot easier to fix right here now. I have to fit a square block into a round hold sort of.
This is kind of difficult to do, but this plug has to go back through here. actually. Wow, this is a lot easier to do when you're going back together. Fishing it out was a total nightmare.
But yeah, there we go. I connectors in all right and I'm just going to feed the whole harness in, connect a bunch of stuff. Uh, and then we can move on to the actual engine harness and there might be some work we have to do to that one too. ECU Harness is reinstalled.
Now it is time for this beauty right here. This is from I think a 2003 Mustang GT I could not find one for a Mach one because they're kind of rare but uh, we'll have to make some modifications to make this work. I think this side goes somewhere Over Yonder and then it just kind of there you go and then you just start it up all right. Fire in the hole.
I'm just kidding I'm just kidding that that won't work at all. We need to connect stuff all right. I've been messing around with this for about an hour, just kind of plugging things in figuring some stuff out. I Had to steal some parts from one of my other cars the lightning of course.
So we have this intake Bellow that's going to connect to the throttle body because this car didn't have a mass air flow sensor but the lightning did. It is a six pin, but I found out that even though we have a four pin, it'll still work. This will sense the airflow, the mass air flow and this is for a separate intake air temperature sensor. So there is a lot of just weird little things that are different with the GT the Cobra and the fact that this was a manual trans.
there's a lot lot of little things. Something else I just ran into is this doesn't plug in here. this is the coolant temperature sensor and I think the previous owner or whatever whoever built this car moved it to here for some reason I think I'm also picking up a handheld scanner later tonight with a base file tune for the Maan automatic so hopefully that works out. but let's see, does this plug into here? Yep.
Okay, so we need to put this guy here. Hopefully it fits and this might be an aftermarket sensor I'm not sure. Oh and it's in there. Please don't break. Oh shoot. I thought I was done with like rusted stuff and fire. Fire expand. Oh man.
nothing. Oh No I got a line wrench on here too and it's starting to strip it. all right guys. I am just going to put this sensor back in here.
We're going to extend the wiring. We have to extend all the ignition coil wires anyway. and honestly I just if this breaks right now and breaks off the pipe, we are. we're dead in the water or coolant.
R This pipe. We're dead in the coolant. I don't want that. Well I know it doesn't look much, but this is a couple hours later of routing wires and just figuring out a lot of tedious things that un unfortunately don't translate well to a video.
It's just sitting at a computer researching trying fitting and just yeah, it it stinks. But I do have some good news. I Ended up picking up an SAT handheld tuner for my friends at Mustang Parts Unlimited.com and this already has my tune pre-loaded with the Pats system turned off. You guys know how much of a pain in the butt? The Pats system has been.
It's it's going to be gone now. Also, Mike the tuner thinks I can reuse this Factory computer. He's already programmed the new tune for an automatic transmission which is great and it might mean that I get to return this because I haven't voided the sticker here if I if I plug this in, it's over I can't return it. but this was like 300 bucks.
So I get that money back Now one of the most timeconsuming parts of this project is going to be the wiring of the ignition coils. So because I wasn't able to find the dual overhead cam Mach 1 or Cobra engine harness and I got the GT harness. it was like 75 bucks, much cheaper. couldn't find the other one.
but because of that the ignition coil connectors. The pins need to be flipped because the PCM controls them in an opposite manner depending on which car you have and they need to be extended for the Dual over head cam valve covers as well. So as you can see, I've already done one so the wires are extended and the pins have been swapped. So I'm going to show you guys how I'm doing that.
So here's our coil connector. We'll cut the tape, don't cut your finger all right, and I'm just going to cut this down to where it connects to the main harness. We'll pull that off. The reason: I'm not just cutting these And flipping the wires and I'm actually flipping the pins around is because of the gauge of wire you can see is different.
We want that to match so we'll pick a good middle point. There we go. Now with the connector off the car, we can pop out this red clip right there and like that. and I have a master D pinning kit.
It comes with like 8,000 little keys. so I found the one that fits perfectly in here and there is a little gray tab that we're just going to flip up just like that and then the pin will come out. I'm going to leave it in there right now and do the other side first. There we go. Okay, so now we switch up, click and click and we have reversed our pins now. Just snap in the red cover like that. Now we're going to use the world's Best wire strippers. Link down below to: Sonic Tools: These are amazing now.
I have a bunch of extra wire. You know, because I gutted this car of about 8,000 ft of wiring harness. so we're just going to use that save some money. Most all of the wiring on there is still in excellent, excellent condition and we're going to twist these wires together like so.
slide over our solder joint and heat it up. Now you can see the solder melting now going through the strands of wiring connecting. The two guys have seen me do this a few times. There we go.
Now we have both of them done. so we're going to plug it in to its coil like that just to get the length so it's got to run back and around all the way over here. We can't just go straight because there's a cover that pushes the coils down and holds them and there's a ridge here for the seal so it can't just go straight up. This length looks pretty good.
Give it the old Snipp aoo. So because we flipped the pins, we can go orange and yellow to orange and yellow right here. Okay, with both ends connected, we're going to run a little bit of electrical tape down this entire length and then I'm going to tape it to the main larger harness there that runs along the valve cover just to kind of make it blend in a little bit. Now this one is done.
wires are ran and then as soon as I'm done with the other two on this side, I'll tuck them in here and make everything look a little bit more. Factory But now I I have six more to go. I'll see you guys in about an hour and after about an hour, I'm done with all of the wiring and before I put our Black cover on to hold the coils, you can see how the wiring is laid out and then this piece here not only hides the coils, which is really nice, but it holds them in as well so they don't have individual bolts. I Really like that.
It's the small things in life or is the little things in life little things is that? I I don't remember small little same thing. All right guys. I Need your opinion from the factory? A lot of the harness is wrapped in tape like this. So I did wrap this up but it's a little bulkier and I'm thinking of going corrugated tube like I did on the passenger side.
I think that's a little cleaner now. I've run out of both black electrical tape and corrugated tube. so I can't do anything about this right now. But what do you guys prefer? The corrugated tube or a nice wrap job with the black electrical tape with all the wiring wrapped up.
Next up is fuel. So I'm going to be taking some fuel injectors from my SVT Lightning these are 42 LB Green Top Ford injectors and the reason for this is I don't know what injectors came in the Cobra so I can't give that information to the tuner and he needs to know that. So we're just going to go with tried and true 42 Pounders Uh, and then I do have larger injectors on order for the Cobra so this is just for now, but these will actually flow quite a bit. Let's get them out. Couple of mismatched bolts here. That's an eight. That's a 10. Flip it around and it's just eights.
Okay, now we can pry these out like that. Oh, there's still some fuel in there okay, all over my toolbox. That's all right. I Do know these injectors work because there was a time where I had the old lightning running it.
Went on tour with eBay all around the country and it ran really well with these fuel injectors. And yes, this will be back eventually. I Did finally finally get the engine back after one full year of being just basically Impr imprisoned by two different machine shops. I got it back.
It's actually sitting in my van and I will get to it. You know? after the Cobra now I've started the Cobra with the lightning injectors ready to go, we can remove this fuel rail and swap out these unknown injectors. They're probably a decent size. they were on this car, most likely when it was making big power, but I just don't know what they are.
20 something years old can't take that chance. Does this not look like like a Ferrari Maserati engine intake manifold situation right here? It's like the same color too. You know what I'm talking about. Maserati You po that upper plenum off and you copied the Cobra engine.
Admit it. and Ferrari Ford vers Ferrari Is this Is this how you got back Atam with all the bolts out? We can pull this up and We have a little bit of fuel because we did jump the fuel pump and get this to, you know, have fuel up to this point, but it wouldn't pulse the injector so nothing got through. All right. So now with the fuel rail popped up I can just go around and remove these injectors.
Let me know if you guys know how big these are. 3102 and they're the Uh Seaman Deca Deca Yeah Deca The real reason I want to swap out these injectors is just to use my old tub of Mercedes-Benz sunroof grease because this might just give us the luck that we need to get this thing to run and its own power, its own computer, its own everything, driver, side injectors going in and these are called Ev1 style connectors. kind of an old school style connector. A lot of new stuff is Ev6.
it's just a different plug that's all still two pin and all. Okay, there's that and now we just do a little dance. Get these all to seat there we go perfect and now the studs go back in. Another piece of aftermarket goodness we can get rid of is this adapter plate for the idle air control motor.
This is aftermarket to work with the Standalone ECU harness. we can go back to the normal Ford one now couple of Allens this will come off and then we got to get the adapter off too and we'll get this gasket off of here. I used a little RTV last time there we go. Okay, goodbye adapter, goodbye aftermarket idle air control motor. Maybe one day we'll see you again, but probably not a factory Ford Idle Air Control Motor Going back in a weight reduction here. without that adapter plate and two extra screws, Every little bit counts. Race car all right, Sweet! I Got to say I'm so glad that I moved the intake air temperature sensor into the intake pipe. The other one had it drilled right into this nice Cobra manifold.
I I couldn't do it I just couldn't It's so it's snake. Oh, wait a minute. There's other things we can remove here. We don't need this map sensor.
This was for the Standalone system as well. That just completely goes away and this is the vacuum source for the map sensor. It's got a lot of connections, doesn't really look the prettiest anymore, so that's gone too now. This upper plenum is ready to go back on the engine and ingest all the air.
It's time to make this engine look a little bit more like an engine. We have this very very nice and thick intake gasket. Great job! Ford Built Ford Tough like a like a rock Chevy What's the current Ford motto or whatever? do they have one they still use Built For Tough I Think they do on the pickups right? The best or nothing is Mercedes Or at least it was a few years ago I don't know. they change every so often.
Okay, there you go. Nice nice. This is looking good good. It's so much cleaner already.
All right. Well, it's always fun to bolt down a plenum and then discover this. These are the two connectors for the idle air control motor and the throttle position sensor and they just pop out like right here. Basically we need to extend them I've kind of pulled them out of the harness I could probably Force This guy on yeah I don't know I don't know I got to get these to reach All right I think I might have gotten away with not having to cut and splice anymore I got these far enough out of the factory harness St I do believe that they will reach.
Let's put this roughly back into position right there. Oh, and look at this. Click. Okay, cool.
All right. So if you're using a two valve Mustang GT harness on a four valve engine, you do not have to splice that. Just release it from the main harness and you're going to be good. These two are plugged in zip.
Zam du time takes time, we have throttle cables to hook up. Let's do this all right. There's one. There's two.
Lots of little fun things to do. Tighten a couple of bolts here. couple of throttle. Springs Here there's actually only one and now I have to install a mass airflow sensor and this is from my lightning.
we're borrowing it and this Bellow that connects to the throttle body also a borrowed part. It's a good thing that I have an extra parts car lightning. so this is just temporarily going to go on like that and we'll tighten the clamp and plug it in. There we go. Now we have a few connectors to plug in by the engine computer click and now we're plugging in hopefully the brains of the operation. the original computer, the beef computer. Okay, everything is plugged in. This is about the time I Start to get a little nervous because we're we're almost turning the key time.
Gosh I Hope this works with the ECU installed, we just have the main engine harness to ECU harness connector. We'll screw this down too. We can install the battery now. Positive Negative: All right.
Okay let's look up the uh, the tuning scanner programmer thingy and do this. See what we got to do? I've never used this SAT but supposedly it's easy. Here we go. Fuel Pump We got fuel pump when we turned the key on.
Yes, so far so good. That is a great sign guys. hold on see what's going on I haven't tuned anything yet. That thing is she's loud.
She's loud so we need to go to program vehicle turn key on All right. So now we're going to go down. I Wish I had a Cobra R but I don't Mach One Base tune. Oh wait, what is that? Oh no, we got smoke.
Oh that smells like burning plastic. Okay I saw it in this area. Hang on. Oh, that's hot.
Oh, Get out of here. What? No way. I have never stinks. dude.
What? Look at this ignition coil. That is insane. It just completely melted. What? I Have never seen this before? All right.
I'm going to let it cool off for a little bit. It is Oh my gosh, Yeah there was fire here. Look at this. It melted the little rubber grommet that holds it down too.
All right. so I'm just kind of. The other ones are cool. wait minute was oh is this just okay.
Yeah, that's just smoke from probably that one because these ones feel fine. You guys ever seen a coil burst into flames? I'm so glad we caught this in time. Fun fun stuff guys. Fun stuff.
All right. let this cool down a little bit. It's still really really hot though. Oh man, look at that that was starting to ooze out.
Can't even grab the thing. All right. let's get this out of here. This is going in the pile of Shame All right, but we have to diagnose what happened here.
This melted a little bit of the plastic, but the PIN looks fine. Hopefully I didn't mess something up with the wiring. I'm going to go Keyon right? So I've turned the ignition on. We're going to ground out our meter here on the battery.
this pin should have battery voltage. It does 12 volts. okay. I Just want to check with another side that I didn't reverse this or anything.
but this should have 12 volts just like that one. Yes, it does. so that's good. So it's normal for the ignition coils to have 12 volts with the key on or obviously the engine running, but it's the job of the engine's computer to ground them. So we here's what we can do. Okay, so we're going to get our ground from the actual connector with the key forward. It should not have 12. VTS If you use this ground here, it shouldn't look at that.
We got battery voltage. Hang on. That's not normal at all. Watch if we take one that didn't burst into flames, we got nothing.
This should not have 12 volts. This is shorted somewhere. Uh, I'm going to go ahead and say it's the engine's computer where it's shorted on. Let's try this.
We have our noid light. This is what we normally use on fuel injectors. This should not Okay. It should not be lighting up right now at all.
Wow, Yeah, that engine computer is bad. Yep, that does not light up. Okay, well. I mean that's not the craziest thing in the world that we have a bad engine computer considering the condition of that area of the car and the other computers.
I've just I've just never seen one short out in a manner that literally lights a coil on fire. So this is a great lesson. Honestly, if you guys buy one of these unknown abandoned vehicles the first time you turn the key forward and power everything up, you should be prepared. like with a fire extinguisher.
I mean especially even if you bought like a flood car or something, Just be ready for anything that could happen even without the engine running Is that? that could have been really bad man. like. Luckily, I saw the I saw the smoke. Okay, so before we plug in our new computer because then I won't be able to return it if I take this yellow sticker off.
Uh, let's try something. Let's disconnect this computer all together and just see what our noid light says. Okay, so we have no engine computer in the mix at all. so if that's not the problem, then we'll still have power and ground at that connector.
So I'm going to go Keyon Now we'll get an engine fan that's normal if you have the engine's computer unplugged. Um, here we go. Oh, that is definitely not a bad engine computer. There's a short to ground somewhere else, so that ground wire right now is just shorting out somewhere somewhere in the car.
Great. That's good news and bad news. We probably don't need an engine computer, but we have to chase down a short to ground. Great All right.
I Found it. You guys see this glabber up pie? a wire with a bunch of solder. This thing was just jammed up inside of this hole, grounding out to the fender. So this was my fault for missing this one wire because a lot of the wiring that they did inside of that harness was just soldered together with electrical tape.
So when I was repairing the harness. I I Probably just didn't see this one and when we pushed it through into the car, it came out, grounded itself out and and caused all this madness. So hopefully that's the last. Uh, hacked up part of the engine harness from before that comes to surface and causes us issues. but you know. definitely a good find. We didn't burn anything down, we got lucky and I'm going to fix this up and then hopefully we'll get to tuning now. I Hope Luckily these ignition coils are very readily available at the auto part store so there's our new one all right.
So with the wire all fixed up and the key forward, we are not getting the light. That's perfect. Yeah, we're making a good connection all right. Cool.
That fixed it and our connector survived. Luckily it Clips right in. Still so okay. I'm going wrap this up and then we can tune.
Okay, we shouldn't have any more fires now and we can just get to using this cool little thing. So program vehicle is what we want, All right? Mustang Cobra It's cool that it has these preloaded Tunes in here. That's nice. but we want this guy.
so my tuner made this tune right now for the Mach one with the automatic and we'll approve everything he did. Okay, we'll go off on there we go. We do have a battery charger connected. you want to make sure your battery voltage never gets low.
and yeah, we're programming this this guy up. So right now what it's doing is it's saving the stock file which we don't know anything about because it's that computer that they tune you know 20 something years ago. So whatever, we'll have it all right. So that's good and here we go.
Now we are uploading our new tune. So information you have to give your tuner is typically the exact injectors you're using a mass air flow sensor. so I give him the part number off of that one and then other things like the fact that we have an automatic transmission and stuff like that and he disabled the Pats I asked him to remove Pats I mean I like Pats like the people out there named Pat you guys are awesome. but the PAT system in the Ford I I'm not not a fan of I don't like it bad.
Pths 8.99 clearing Dtc's all right I Love that sound. Why does some manual transmission cars have this where you can't get the key out? You have to push this and then you can get the key out. My TransAm has that as well. It was originally a manual transmission, but a lot of other manual transmissions don't have that button.
What is the idea that there? they make it more difficult for you to remove the key but the automatics don't have that. I Please explain. All right guys, this is it. This is it.
It should start right now. theoretically I'm scared, but here we go. Okay, literally we got nothing I turn the key, no starter activation whatsoever. What we had that with the old horrible harness before.
Why the issue? There could be the fact that I don't have the transmission haress installed. This one was totally hacked up I have a new one that's coming in tomorrow. but I did notice that they had a ground wire this gray one I just snipped it because I thought I was removing this whole harness. but I wonder if they were grounding out the neutral safety switch? Let's strip this and connect it again. It's like a shark going in there to eat. All right? I Just did a super sweet wiring repair there. Check this out guys! We have a red and blue wire coming from power and it goes into the transmission range sensor and the output is white and pink. so so if we combined this wire and this, we jumped them together then the output will go to the starter relay and that that could that could work.
All right guys. I Have to jump the starter relay here. so the key is on right now. there we go.
there we go. Yeah, you're alive. Woo we did it. Look at that.
Oh man, that's all you need. Okay, all right. hang on. Okay we got to go around and like look, check for leaks and stuff like that.
but it runs. It runs all right. So the transmission harness that I need to Simply turn, turn the key and start. the thing didn't come in today.
it was supposed to. it's coming in tomorrow. but whatever, we we jumped it, it runs and and I didn't even have to give it any throttle and it and it and it runs. I'm going to go around and and check for leaks and stuff.
I had to make another fuel hose here. the other one was just seeping a little bit. So I have to revamp a lot of the fuel system. but uh oh man guys, my SVT Cobra runs the world's fastest.
You know it was in the past. Everything's looking good. We have no engine oil leaks, no transmission leaks. nothing now.
of course this thing isn't going to run perfectly right now. We might actually have a couple of vacuum leaks using this lightning. Bellow But yeah, I mean overall, the engine's not knocking. It sounds really, really good.
All right. Hang on. I Want to start it up again? It's dark. my neighbors are all gone.
I'm running open headers. There's the old exhaust. Check it out. The transmission harness is here.
I'm going to go plug this in and then we should be able to just turn the key. I Got the new Trans harness in so that's plugged in. We should be able to just simply crank this over. now.
let's see. there we go. He's alive. Go to Oil pressure.
Ah, it died. Oh wait a minute. No. What is this that looks like fuel? It's definitely fuel.
What? It's not coming from the fuel pump or the fuel filter. Oh yeah, this is all just wet, just a little bit. Oh no. I shouldn't be too surprised the steel braided hoses on the fuel rail were leaking as well.
This car is going to need a complete revamp of the entire fuel system. This is probably why it takes forever to build fuel pressure and it's most likely very air rated. It's probably sucking air in right right here. I Don't know about you guys, but I'm breathing a big sigh of relief that the Cobra is alive and doing well. so I was able to verify that the oil pressure is good. We don't have any leaks, we don't have a rod knock. The engine generally sounds pretty good, but I don't want to press my luck with that fuel leak in the back. That line is most likely leaking all the way to the front and air.
rating the fuel which I believe believe is one of the many reasons why this engine isn't running perfectly. We have a lot of tuning and and little things to look into, but she's alive and I'm running out of cars here that don't start. hopefully soon. The Cobra's brother, the lightning I need to name my cars I just called them what what they're actually called but hopefully that'll be running one day as well.
and in the next video we just are going back into more meat and potatoes. We have to take a look at the braking system. we have to run an entire new fuel system and who knows what else to get this guy to. D Drive down the road for the first time in over 20 years.
So I hope you guys really enjoyed the madness of this video. It's been an up and down roller coaster but we came out ahead and if you did enjoy it, give it a big thumbs up. Share the video with your friends and family, all of your Ford lovers out there, and if you haven't already subscribe to the channel, most importantly, have an awesome day! I'll catch all of you in the next video now. I know a lot of you guys I know some of you guys had commented about if I should go now some Star Trek you like Star Trek except on the TA the except on the TA lockup except on the TA that but I do have some really good news.
I Ended up picking up an Sect handheld uh what do we call this handheld I Got to say guys I'm so glad I didn't drill the intake air temperature sensor into um I Got to say I'm so glad I I'm so glad I All right guys, All right guys I need I don't speak English If you guys made it this far into the video and passed the bloopers, thank you so much! And I have a coupon code special for you guys at Legit Stre Cars.com You can use Sbt5 and get 15% off the entire website. Spring is on the way! I Only have a few seconds. We got legit street car shop wipes, foam cannons gigantic Triant It's amazing. Microfibers and much more SVT 15 Thanks guys!.
If you stagger your wire connections/cuts it will be less bulky. The connections will be offset with each other.
Looks like there's a few chips missing from the aftermarket computer ?
Braided mesh sheathing is my favorite. 👍🏽🙏🏼
I like the touch at the end. Great video.
Hardest thing is to not get excited to early. Always do your checks. Check fuel leaks. Check for electric smoke. Check brakes.
I am sure all that nest of wiring made sense at one time. Pieces added over time.
I look at my wiring from 20 years ago and scratch my head sometimes. Lol
Fixing someone else’s project can be a real nightmare! Nicely done
I’ve seen ford coils melt like that when the harness was shorted out on a 4.6 powered super duty!!? Melted new one as well before I found the short to ground in the harness..
Black Fabric tape looks much better imho
I would love to pick your brain on electrical issues, I struggle in that area!
Holley would have made your job 10x easier and way better than hp tuners. All plug in play and don’t have to worry about another old wiring mess. And you still had to buy another questionable harness and hp tuners on top of that. but to each there own
Great diag there Alex
Of the fans come on in pats lockout it's the ecu
Hi, Alex,
writing this from Germany I would like to say "Thanks!" for your videos… Have watched a most of them and that's always fun for me 😅 Even very familiar with our German technical stuff and also cars like Audi (30 km from me here), BMW and Mercedes I prefer and drive the famous french label "Citroen" since many years.
These cars are are less pragmatic in comparison to our German brands but they are more "artistic", really innovative and special.
At present I use a Citroen C6 and even it's very exotic here I love it really to drive the C6 with the special – air driven suspension – so called "AMVAR".
Not sure if the Citroen C6 was available at any place in US,.. I don't think so. Also not in production anymore since 2012, remembers me on your De Lorean… Even more modern – but similar exotic.
Again thanks a lot making me fun to you!
Best regards to Chicago from Annaberg-Buchholz, Erzgebirge, Germany!
